Australia Open semi-finals tips and suggested bets

Coco Gauff

Planet Sport offers tips and suggested bets for the Australian Open semi-finals on Thursday and Friday.

The Australian Open is down to the last four in the men's and women's singles.

Thursday will see the women's singles final settled with a brand new Grand Slam finalist guaranteed.

All but one of the men's semi-finalists was seeded to reach this stage with the only Alexander Zverev managing an upset in the last eight.

Cori Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka

The rematch of the US Open final goes down on the more neutral turf of Melbourne where Sabalenka has usually been well-appreciated but she might find that the rising American star will have her supporters right behind her.

Gauff might end up coming up short but her game has been precise from the outset and has won every first set she has played this tournament.

In two of her wins over Sabalenka, Gauff has won the first set by the score of 7-5 and she may just have the patience to pull that scoreline off again in Melbourne.

Sabalenka winning by two sets to one would seem a fair aggregation of the player's respective form and offer a fair payout to boot.

Dayana Yastremska vs Qinwen Zheng

Dayana Yastremska and Qinwen Zheng meet in a little bit of a wildcard semi-final that is tough to call even if the Chinese No 1 is favoured to emulate her idol Li Na and reach the Australian Open exactly ten years after her compatriot became the first Chinese woman to win the Grand Slam.

A 4-6 first-set scoreline favouring Zheng might be the way to go with the Chinese player in the form of her life.

Zheng might just power away to a 2-0 win when it comes to the set score.

Zheng has been able to grind when she needs to but she might sweep the second set if she is able to break Yastremska's spirit in that opening set bringing the bagel into play.

Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev

This will be the 19th meeting between Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev with the Russian leading 11-7 in their head-to-head.

Getting value out of a Medvedev win would rest on at least getting his set score correct with 3-2 looking likely considering the form of both players.

Zverev outclassed Alcaraz in the previous round while Medvedev did things the hard way in a five-set win over Hubert Hurkacz, backing the over 4.5 sets works tidily alongside a 3-2 win for either player.

A loss by one set will put Zverev in the frame to come in under the -1.5 set handicap many sportsbooks are offering on him.

Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner

Had Jannik Sinner not developed his own injury concerns through this Australian Open he might have been a good dark horse to back in the last four.

Novak Djokovic seems to have shrugged off his injury worries and is unsurprisingly short to go all the way to a 25th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic winning this contest by three sets to one strikes a conservative balance between risk and reward.

That 3-1 scoreline would also see Sinner come in under a -2.5 set handicap.

In Djokovic's last two wins over Sinner, he took the first set 6-3 and that score repeating might be a good omen for the Serbian and a windfall for punters.
