Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek headline entry list for Western & Southern Open
Former world number one and 23-time grand slam winner Serena Williams will make her first home appearance in two years.
The 40-year-old tennis great returned to competitive action at Eastbourne last month, playing alongside Ons Jabeur in a doubles event.Ā
Williams went on to compete at Wimbledon, but faced a first-round defeat at the hands of Harmony Tan.
The player is now set to make her first competitive appearance in the United States since the 2020 US Open after being named in the entry list for the Western & Southern Open.
The event, which gets underway on August 13, will be a star-studded one after 39 of the WTA's top 40 confirmed their place at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre in Mason, Ohio.
Williams is a two-time winner of the event and is able to join the entry list due to her protected ranking.

World number one Iga Swiatek tops the entry list as she looks to return to winning ways following her third-round exit at Wimbledon.
The Pole was in the midst of a record-breaking 37-match unbeaten run before losing to Alize Cornet - the longest streak since the turn of the century.
Five former Western & Southern Open champions are also set to compete, including Victoria Azarenka, Madison Keys, Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova.
Recently crowned Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, four-time major winner Naomi Osaka and reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu will join the competitive field.
