Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Ultimate Tennis Showdown to continue recovery
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has deferred his return to the sport, pulling out of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) scheduled in Seoul owing to a wrist injury.
The tournament, slated to unfold at the Korea International Exhibition Centre from November 30 to December 3, serves as the stage for determining the final qualifiers for the inaugural UTS Grand Final in London.
Confirmed participants for the exhibition showdown in South Korea include Gael Monfils, Alexander Bublik, and Jan-Lennard Struff.
Kyrgios, absent for the majority of the 2023 season, aimed to mark his return at the tournament. His setbacks in the 2022 season included withdrawing from the Australian Open in January due to a knee injury and subsequently missing the French Open.
After a brief attempt at a comeback in June at the Stuttgart Open, Kyrgios withdrew from Wimbledon due to a torn ligament in his wrist. The 28-year-old's absence from the US Open and the remainder of the ATP Tour in 2023 became apparent.
"There's still a lot of work to do. I had some more setbacks after my knee coming back the first time. It was just not where I wanted to be and it was still causing me a lot of pain," said Kyrgios.
"Obviously parts of other parts of my body were starting to feel sore and I was getting a couple of niggles here or there as well. My right wrist type of thing, just because I was compensating."
