Jannik Sinner downs Frances Tiafoe in Cincinnati to clinch fifth title of the season
World number one Jannik Sinner eclipsed the home favourite Frances Tiafoe in straight sets 7-6 (4) 6-2 to win the final of the Cincinnati Open.
The Italian had pushed through hip troubles all tournament and again appeared to favour it during a tight first set as he occasionally limped between points.
But his determination to capture a fifth title this season won out, as he claimed the first set in a tiebreak.
The American was unable to match Sinner from there, with the Australian Open championing wrapping up the result in just one hour and 37 minutes.
Speaking on court after the win, Sinner said: "It was a very difficult week, tough week. I'm very happy about about today's match.
"It was very tough mentally. Had such an amazing run here, and I tried to do my best today. We both were quite tired from yesterday.
"We both felt a lot of tension, but I'm very glad about (the) level I played today, especially in the important moments."
Sinner said his attention now turns to the US Open.
"Now, for sure, it's important to recover, to be to be ready for New York," he said.
"This is our main goal here for this US swing.
"I'm very happy to be in a position where I am and just trying to keep going mentally, having this hunger to keep playing, and hopefully I can show some good tennis also in New York."
