Shrewsbury vs Wrexham tips and predictions: Shrews and Dragons to entertain in cross-border rivalry
Shrewsbury Town will play host to old foes Wrexham in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon (1400 GMT).
Given the proximity between Wrexham and Shrewsbury, it makes sense that a cross-border rivalry does exist, although the fixture has become a rarity in recent years.
Not only do we line your pockets on the weekend, but you also learn a historical factoid or two: Shrewsbury was under Welsh rule for several years in the 1200s. So, yeah.
The Red Dragons will fancy their chances of taming the Shrews on Sunday. The Shropshire club have tasted defeat in four of five, but remember they are a league above.
Matthew Taylor’s side has managed to avoid defeat in eight of 12 at home, though, and they’ve got a good recent record in the FA Cup.
Two late goals from Sunderland halted their progress last season and in doing so became the first side to win an FA Cup match at the New Meadow since Man Utd in 2016.
Town’s unbeaten home run in the competition stretched back 16 matches and includes results against the likes of Liverpool, West Ham and Wolves.
Expectations continue to grow in North Wales and despite being a division below, Phil Parkinson’s teams are even money favourites to progress.
They’ve slipped up in eight of 14 away from the Racecourse Ground, though, so we think the bookmakers' pricing of this game is questionable.
The Welsh side’s fame and fortune paints a target square on their back and Town aren’t going to lay down on home soil. We fancy them to claim at least a draw.
It’s also worth noting there have been over 2.5 goals in seven of their last eight at home, including their 3-2 win over Colchester in the first round.
Wrexham have saved the majority of goals and chaos for the Racecourse, but their FA Cup adventures have been full of goals.
Their last eight in the competition have averaged 4.5 goals and both teams have scored in eight of the last 10, so goals wouldn’t be a surprise.
