Premier League outright winners odds: Arsenal won't dethrone Man City, Liverpool can close gap

Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan lifts the Premier League trophy

Planet Sport takes a closer look at the outright odds ahead of the new Premier League season.

Greek philosopher Aristotle believed that patience was a virtue. But then again, what does he know - the Greeks never had to experience the excruciating period between the end of one Premier League season and the start of a new one.

Thankfully, the wait is almost over as clubs return from their lucrative pre-season voyages for another nail-biting campaign in the top tier of English football.

Here, Planet Sport takes a closer look at the outright winners market.

Manchester City - 8/11 (Fav)

With Manchester City on the lookout for their sixth title in seven years, you'd be forgiven for thinking the Premier League is turning into the Bundesliga.

But don't be fooled. Unlike the dreary German league, the battle for the title in England may involve more than two clubs.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool are just some of the teams who will be looking to challenge Pep Guardiola's indomitable side.

Despite this, the bookmakers have a lot of faith in the Citizens. The club have figured out a winning formula in the Premier League and toppling them will take some doing.

City will be without a couple of big names this year, yet that hasn't turned off the bookmakers who still have the defending champions as firm favourites.
Ilkay Gundogan is one of the men who has departed. The midfielder played a pivotal role in City's treble-winning campaign, though the German international has decided to swap the rainy Lancastrian climate for the sunny rays of Barcelona.
Riyad Mahrez, on the other hand, opted to add another zero to the size of his wage with a big move to Saudi Arabia.
Guardiola and his men will compete in seven competitions this season and considering the level of success the Spaniard has achieved with the Citizens, you could never rule out a septuple.

However, retaining the Premier League crown will undoubtedly be one of the priorities as City look to keep the domestic party going.

Arsenal - 5/1

The Gunners landed the first big blow on Manchester City by beating them in the Community Shield. Or have they?
City have now lost their last three Community Shields, yet that hasn't stopped them from dominating the Premier League.
Nevertheless, Arsenal will be hoping to take their early bit of momentum into the new season, though they should know better than anyone else that it's not about how you start - it's all about how you finish.
Mikel Arteta has splashed £200m on transfers this summer with the additions of Jurrien Timber, Kai Havertz and Declan Rice.
The bookmakers, who have priced Arsenal at around the 5/1 mark to win the league, clearly don't think these three players alone will be able to help the Gunners close the gap to City.
With the added pressures of Champions League football, Arsenal have a lot of plates to spin and a lot of expectations to meet.
While they are capable of giving the Citizens a run for their money, it will take a mammoth effort to dethrone the current kings.

Liverpool - 7/1

Following a disappointing fifth-placed finish last season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been busy rebuilding his side.
James Milner, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were all among the old guard who departed over the summer.
Midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have been brought in to beef up the numbers for a combined price of just under £100m.

Managing Thursday night Europa League action with the Premier League has been a hindrance to a number of clubs in the past and making a title charging while balancing mid-week trips to Cyprus is no easy feat.

Liverpool will be strong contenders to finish in the top four - even if a title challenge may seem a step too far.

Manchester United - 11/1

Time flies and nothing underlines that more than the fact this season will mark Manchester United's 11th attempt at winning a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson's exit.

While the Red Devils have improved under Erik ten Hag, this is a team that is still some distance away from matching their blue neighbours.

Ten Hag has brought in Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to the club during the summer transfer window.
Nevertheless, the bookmakers are still expecting the Red Devils to finish a long way behind the eventual champions having been priced at around the 11/1 mark.

Chelsea - 16/1

Following a nightmare season at Stamford Bridge, Mauricio Pochettino has been brought in to try and deliver fresh hope.

The Argentine has completely rebuilt his squad, getting rid of 13 players and signing seven.
Chelsea are firmly in the rebuilding phase and it may take some time before they are ready to challenge for the title. The current odds of 16/1 certainly underline that notion.

Newcastle - 18/1

Newcastle sensationally powered into the top four last season to bag Champions League football.

Despite having the backing of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Eddie Howe hasn't gone crazy with the cheque book.

Sandro Tonali was the club's most expensive addition at £55m and was one of three new players to arrive at St James' Park.

Making an impact in Europe and fighting for another top four finish will be a major challenge for the Magpies in itself. Battling for the title is simply not on the agenda for the North East outfit.

Tottenham - 40/1

From tackling the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane, to the continuing wait for trophies, Ange Postecoglou has many challenges waiting for him as the new Tottenham boss.
One of the few positives for the Australian is the club's absence from European competitions - something which will allow Spurs to solely focus on domestic duties.
This could very well help the North London outfit climb back into the top six. However, it's fair to say that title ambitions are a long way away for Tottenham.

Aston Villa - 125/1

Aston Villa have been making a lot of noise over the summer - particularly with the signings of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby.
Following a strong end to the season under new boss Unai Emery, the Birmingham outfit are heading into the new campaign with plenty of optimism.
Should Villa win the title, it would rank among one of the greatest stories in Premier League history. The current price of 125/1 certainly underlines that.

However, stranger things have happened, and if Emery can replicate last season's run-in, he can give some of the giants a good run for their money.
