No team has collected more points in the Western Conference than Sporting KC (22) and Real Salt Lake (23) since the start of May, but the teams are in very different form right now.
Sporting spent weeks overachieving at home and regressed with back-to-back defeats against Los Angeles FC and Chicago Fire.
Overall, Peter Vermes' side have won just one of their last five matches and faces arguably their stiffest home test of the season so far.
The visitors are unbeaten in 10 matches in all competitions on their travels and have recorded consecutive victories over Austin, DC United, St Louis and Toronto.
RSL have had eight different goalscorers in their last five road matches and it's hard to see what can halt their wave of momentum right now.
Sporting have a reasonably strong home record but they've massively overperformed when we look at expected goals for and against.
They're not likely to get high-quality chances against Real Salt Lake and we've seen evidence of their luck running out in recent matches.
Despite their points tally, they've failed to win six of their previous 11 matches at home and failed to score in four of them. Arguably, it just highlights that the Western Conference is weak and unpredictable.
It's also worth noting that these two are old foes back to their days of competing for MLS Cups together. Sporting have won just four of 20 meetings and have a negative home record.
The visitors are in such good goalscoring form, netting 20 in 10, and the addition of Cristian Arango, who contributed to 38 goals in 54 matches for LAFC, should elevate them to another level.
