Euro 2024: Germany vs Hungary tips and predictions - Expect Hungarians to compete and find the net

Florian Wirtz for Germany

Germany can become the first side to book their spot in the Round of 16 on Wednesday (1700 BST) when they face Hungary at the MHPArena in Stuttgart.

Germany can secure straight-forward passage to the Round of 16 with a win over Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday, though it’s not a foregone conclusion.

There have been 10 instances of teams taking maximum points from group-stage matches at the European Championship since the turn of the century.

The majority of teams, 18 to be precise, have failed to do so. But in every case, it’s been achieved by a team in and around FIFA’s top 10.

Germany may be expected to do so but it’s worth remembering this is a nation that embarrassed itself at previous tournaments and recently lost at home to Japan and Turkey.

As the saying goes, you can only beat what’s in front of you. What was in front of Die Mannschaft last Friday was a shambles that any team at the tournament would have beaten.

Hungary’s best showing this century came as they surprised Austria, winning 2-0, and played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal in 2016 to top the group with five points.

Their opening defeat put their backs firmly to the wall early on in Germany so another resounding defeat, coupled with a victory for Switzerland, could end their qualification hopes.

Beating the Germans in their backyard will prove a mighty tough task for any side, yet we have to believe we’ll see a response from Hungary.

Before the late setback they suffered in Ireland, Marco Rossi’s side were unbeaten in 14 and had only lost to Italy in their previous 21 matches.

They were competitive against Italy, they beat England twice and caused Germany all sorts of problems in a 1-1 draw before beating them in Leipzig three months later.

Having shown they can compete at this level, Rossi almost certainly sent a rocket up his players after their first-half collapse against the Swiss, to which his players responded.

Julian Nagelsmann's side looks like the most likely winner, but they shouldn’t be favoured to win by at least two clear goals on the evidence of the past two years.

Team news

Manuel Neuer, Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rudiger were never troubled during the opening match, yet the latter found a way to put through his net.

Florian Wirtz lit up the Allianz Arena as the German wonderkid took just 10 minutes to open the scoring.

Niclas Fullkrug looked dangerous as a substitute but Kai Havertz is expected to lead the line again.

Dominik Szoboszlai was out of sorts last week but will again start alongside Roland Sallai with goalscorer Barnabas Varga in attack.

The experienced Laszlo Kleinheisler was a breath of fresh air in the last matches and may have earned a start.
