Euro 2024: Netherlands vs Austria tips and predictions - Memphis Depay to score in Berlin

Memphis Depay against Senegal World Cup Nov 22

The Netherlands will be hoping to pip France to top spot in Group D when they face an Austria side also in need of points in Berlin on Tuesday (1700 BST).

If the Netherlands clash with Austria on Tuesday produces a winner then that team will automatically qualify for the Round of 16 and could even top the group.

The pressure is largely on Austria, who may need a point to be sure of their status as a third-place qualifier, while a draw guarantees the Netherlands a top-two finish.

Some will argue that the Dutch should already be home and dry as group winners. Xavi Simons was disallowed as the ball flashed past Denzel Dumfries, deemed offside, and into the net.

The reality is while the letter of the law was (loosely) applied, France goalkeeper Mike Maignan was never getting there and was wiley enough to act as if obstructed.

The draw was good news for the Austrians. After beating Poland 3-1 earlier in the day, they find themselves in a three-horse race after their opening defeat to France.

Ralf Rangnick’s side couldn’t have argued if they’d trailed at halftime, but the second half was a different story as they produced better football and goalscoring chances.

Ronald Koeman’s side presents an equally different test and he’ll be hoping history repeats itself, as the Dutch have won the last seven meetings dating back to 1992.

On the one hand, four points is an excellent return from the opening two games, yet they weren’t convincing against a Polish side who produced better chances in the second half.

A 0-0 draw with France is commendable but we’ve seen Les Blues look short of quality without Mbappe, just as they were during a 0-0 draw with lowly Canada recently.

Austria’s 1-0 defeat ended a run of 17 games in which Rangnick’s team had found the back of the net and we expect them to get back on track here.

Equally, it’s hard to envisage their opponents drawing a blank. There's more to come from their attack but with players like Memphis Depay, who has 45 goals in 92 matches, they’re always likely to score.

Given his superb record for his country, plus the possibility this game could become end-to-end, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him get off the mark in Berlin.

Team news

The Netherlands have no new injury concerns.

Simons will start behind Depay with Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong joining them in the attack.

Liverpool’s Virgin van Dijk and Man City’s Nathan Ake will continue in the defence.

Marko Arnautovic was handed a start in the last match and may retain his spot after scoring.

Max Wober and Kevin Danso, who played against France, were dropped in favour of Philipp Leinhart and Gernot Trauner for matchday two.
