Euro 2024 and Copa America acca
Switzerland vs Italy (1700 BST, Saturday)
The defending champions haven’t lived up to expectations at Euro 2024. They came from behind against Albania but coasted, and so nearly conceded a late goal.
They were thoroughly embarrassed by a team levels above when losing 1-0 to Spain and it took a 90th-minute wondergoal to prevent them from losing 1-0 to Croatia.
Switzerland held Germany to a 1-1 draw and performed well throughout the group stage. Breel Emboli is getting fitter and they look like a very hard team to beat.
Argentina vs Peru (0100 BST, Sunday)
Argentina beat Canada 2-0 in their first match and left it late to beat Peru 1-0 to secure qualification. The world champions haven’t been troubled at all.
Peru could qualify with an unlikely win, but that won’t stop them from sitting off and trying to keep the score at 0-0 for the first half at least.
Lionel Scaloni will make changes so the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, Alejandro Garnacho and Leandro Paredes, but we still expect them to win.
Canada vs Chile (0100 BST, Sunday)
From a statistical point of view, Canada’s 1-0 win over Peru was extremely bizarre. Jesse Marsch’s side took five shots in the match, all of which were big chances of 0.20xG or more.
Four of those came later in the game after a red card, so for the most part, they offered absolutely no creative threat against a lesser team than Chile.
The Chileans drew 0-0 with Peru and held on until the 88th minute against Argentina. They would always target this game and a win will take them through.
England vs Slovakia (1700 BST, Sunday)
England do not look like a team capable of winning a tournament. That said, Gareth Southgate’s side has allowed just one goal and have conceded the fewest xG in Germany.
The imbalance in midfield was somewhat addressed against Slovenia, allowing the Three Lions to dominate the ball and show glimpses.
It’ll take an improved performance to beat a stubborn Slovakia side who beat Belgium 1-0 in the group stage, but we expect that.
France vs Belgium (1700 BST, Monday)
Similar to Southgate, Didier Deschamps has received criticism for how he utilises France’s players as Les Blues claimed five points from three matches.
However, the world champions arguably did enough to win all three group-stage matches, even if they weren't at their best and struggled to finish chances.
Belgium were recently booed off the pitch by their fans. They look like a collection of talented individuals, so France should be able to keep them quiet.
