England U21s can take a big step towards European Championship glory when they take on Portugal in the quarter-final.

England have won the European Under-21 Championship twice in their history, in 1982 and 1984, but this year they look close to once again achieving that.

The young players led by Lee Carsley have had a perfect tournament so far, and managed to win every game in the group stage.

On the other side, the Portuguese really struggled to get past the group stage.

Portugal has the moral advantage though as they managed to win the last head to head games against England.
At the final tournaments in 2015 and 2021, Portugal managed to win against England, 1-0 and 2-0.
It's worth adding though that in total, in the last six head to head games between the two national teams, each team managed to win three times.
Hopes at winning a major trophy for this generation really increased in the group stage, as England managed three convincing wins against Czech Republic, Israel and Germany, all with the same scoreline 2-0.

But this is only the second qualification to the knockout rounds for England in the last seven final tournaments.

Their excellent results at this years U21 European Championship aren't by chance, as the Young Lions have six wins and only one defeat in their last seven games, with the defeat being in a friendly game, 1-2 against Croatia.

In the same time it's worth remembering that in each of England's last twelve wins they also managed to score at least two goals.

The fact that England is a very balanced team is proven by another important relevant statistic: they managed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last seven games.
The team led by Rui Jorge managed to reach the quarterfinals thanks to a dramatic victory in the last game of the group, 2-1 against Belgium, thanks to a goal scored after a penalty in the 89th minute of the game.

The Portuguese lost the opening game against Georgia (0-2), then they only managed a draw against Netherlands (1-1).

Portugal aren't going through the best run of form, and has two defeats in their last six games. Besides the already mentioned defeat against Georgia, they also suffered a defeat against Japan (1-2), in the autumn.

What's interesting is that each of their last six games we had between two and three goals at the end.
