Weston McKennie on the move with Everton, Inter Miami among clubs interested
Weston McKennie is on the move this summer after contract talks with Juventus broke down, with Premier League and MLS clubs showing interest.
Juventus and United States midfielder Weston McKennie is likely to leave Turin this summer after failing to agree a new deal.
Planet Sport understands that while contract talks did take place, the club and player were unable to agree on a suitable remuneration or his role in the team.
The 25-year-old was often deployed as a right wing-back by former manager Max Allegri, who was relieved of his duties in May.
McKennie believes he is capable of playing in his preferred midfield role at the highest level, which he did during an ill-fated six-month loan to Leeds United.
However, new head coach Thiago Motta doesn’t see the US international as a starting player in his side, which has sparked interest from several Premier League and MLS clubs.
Earlier in the window, McKennie so nearly joined Aston Villa in a swap deal that saw Douglas Luiz head the other way before his involvement in talks broke down.
More recently, Everton have been rumoured to be working on a deal to bring McKenne to Goodison Park, however, there is no deal in the works at this stage.
The Toffees need midfield reinforcements with Amadou Onana on the verge of joining Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth up to £50 million.
The influx of cash will help ease the burden of current financial constraints at Goodison Park, but it’s unlikely they can afford to reinvest the entire fee.
The American is available for a fee in the region of £15 million, which also opens up the possibility of a move to his native land, where several MLS suitors would be keen to secure his signature.
FC Cincinnati, where fellow US international Miles Robinson plays his football, reportedly launched an ambitious move to sign McKennie which will likely fall short.
At the time of writing, Robinson is just one of three USMNT players to play Stateside, along with backup goalkeeper Sean Johnson, and 19-year-old Shaq Moore.
While it seems improbable that a 25-year-old US international in his prime would swap the possibility of top-flight football in Europe for MLS, if any club can convince him, it may be Inter Miami.
McKennie would almost certainly command a designated player slot, which is a special contract that allows MLS clubs to sign a maximum of three players outside of their wage structure.
Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Leonardo Campana are signed to DP contracts with the Florida club, meaning their quota is currently full, and the latter, who signed from Wolves in 2022, may need to depart to facilitate a move.
McKennie remains in limbo for the time being, but links to Everton are gathering pace and pending further developments, a move to Merseyside sounds like his best option.
