Vinicius Junior saves Real Madrid as Kylian Mbappe's La Liga drought continues

Vinicius Junior scores for Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe awaits his first La Liga goal as Real Madrid relied on a Vinicius Junior penalty to secure a 1-1 draw against struggling Las Palmas.

Mbappe was on target as Real lifted the European Super Cup but has now failed to find the target in his first three league games since arriving from Paris St Germain.

Real headed to Gran Canaria widely expected to pick up a first away win of the season against a side without a victory since February.

But they trailed for more than an hour to Alberto Moleiro's early goal, and despite a late rally had to settle for a point.

Moleiro struck after five minutes when he received the ball on the left of the Real penalty area from former Sheffield United forward Oli McBurnie.

He burst through a coupe of weak challenges before rifling an angled drive across Thibaut Courtois and inside the far post.

Real got the equaliser after 69 minutes when Alex Suarez was penalised for handball in a goalmouth scramble and Vinicius calmly tucked away the penalty.

Earlier, Girona picked up their first win of the season in style with a 4-0 thumping of Osasuna.

Bryan Gil fired the hosts ahead after 33 minutes with a superb sliding finish at the far post.

Quickfire goals from Star Wars fan Viktor Tsygankov, who celebrated by brandishing a light sabre, and Abel Ruiz put Girona 3-0 up 10 minutes into the second half.

Cristhian Stuani tapped in a cross from Donny van de Beek to complete the scoring a minute from time.
