Translation of Marcelo Bielsa's furious rant as he destroys CONMEBOL and the USA at Copa America press conference
Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa used his pre-match press conference ahead of the third-place play-off to deliver a damning verdict on CONMEBOL and the USA
Marcelo Bielsa launched into a furious rant as he pointed the finger at CONMEBOL and the United States in Friday’s Copa America press conference.
El Loco was speaking to the press ahead of Uruguay’s third-place play-off clash with Jesse Marsch’s Canada on Saturday night.
CONMEBOL and the US have come under pressure for numerous issues relating to Copa America 2024, including high ticket prices, poor pitches and security concerns.
Darwin Nunez and his Uruguay teammates dominated the news this week after they were filmed engaging in an altercation with Colombian supporters after their semi-final defeat.
When asked about the possibility of his players being sanctioned, the Argentinian didn’t hold back, saying: “The players were forced to act that way. The sanction should not be for the players, but for those who did not prevent this from happening.
There was no prevention, nor an escape route. They failed. How can you not defend your mother, your wife, your baby?”
Not content with defending his players and setting the record straight in the aftermath of the shocking scenes, he decided to take aim at tournament organisers for a plethora of issues.
An animated and agitated Bielsa said: “They always point to the referees, and say that the pitches are in perfect condition, and all the lies they have told.
They did press conferences to say that the pitches were perfect, and you see the grass poorly united”
He continued, “They said that the training pitches were perfect, and Bolivia was not able to have training sessions. I have all the photos that prove the lie”.
While El Loco usually cuts a reserved and philosophical figure, there’s no denying he has a strong sense of justice.
In the most damning part of his speech, Bielsa shouted “They are a plague of liars!”.
Continuing on the subject of poor pitches, he added: “I’m saying everything I promised myself not to say. They are threatening us, you’ll see. Scaloni dared to criticise the state of the pitch only once.
These are known mistakes. Americans don’t tell us that the pitch is in perfect condition. They admit that the grass was planted three days before the game”
He also had plenty to say about the state of the training grounds provided to the countries.
“The training grounds are a disaster. Bolivia had to suspend its training session but since it is Bolivia, no one cares”
The former Leeds United boss then rubbished a CONMEBOL statement that claimed VAR failed to award Brazil’s Vinicius Junior a penalty in their 1-1 draw with Colombia.
“There were many injustices with the weaker teams… But CONMEBOL accuses the referees of not giving Brazil a penalty.”
Clips of Bielsa’s animated outburst went viral on social media within half an hour.
CONMEBOL have yet to issue a response but will surely weigh in on the accusations thrown their way.
