Transfer news: Roma credited with surprise interest in Sheffield United midfielder
According to reports, Serie A side Roma have been linked with a surprise move for Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer
Fresh reports are linking Daniele De Rossi’s Roma with a move for Sheffield United creative midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
Hamer joined Sheffield United for around £15 million last summer but breaking news suggests he could swap Bramall Lane for the Olympic Stadium.
He played a starring role for Coventry City, who shrewdly plucked him from PEC Zwolle for the comparatively small fee of £1.5 million in 2020, with 41 goal contributions.
It was only a matter of time before the Premier League came calling and indeed, the Blades snapped him up in August 2023.
Despite the club’s immediate return to the Championship, Hamer was often a standout performer with four goals and six assists across 36 appearances.
The Blades made record losses during their most recent season in the second tier but Premier League parachute payments will help to ease the burden of this season.
Still, relegated clubs must walk a financial tightrope, and United could demand a substantial fee for Hamer, primarily because the number eight has shown some proficiency at the highest level.
Not only are Roma in good financial standing and able to commit to a sizeable fee, but they may also provide an upfront payment to help with cash flow in South Yorkshire.
Chris Wilder’s side are expected to be particularly active in the coming weeks with 10 squad players having departed Bramall Lane and Ben Brereton-Diaz returning to Villareal.
Serie A outfit Roma spent the early days of the transfer window chasing the signature of Federico Chiesa, who has ‘disappointed’ them by failing to agree a move.
