Sunderland 'delighted' after snapping up Hungary international Callum Styles from Barnsley
Sunderland have signed Hungary international Callum Styles from Barnsley.
The 23-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on loan until the end of the season, with the Black Cats having an option to make the switch permanent.
The left-sided utility player is Sunderland’s third January arrival following the permanent signings of Leo Hjelde and Romaine Mundle.
Styles progressed through Burnley's academy before signing for Bury at the age of 16. The player then represented his hometown club on 47 occasions, with a move to Barnsley coming to fruition in 2018.
He spent the majority of last season on loan in the second tier with Millwall and has earned 18 international caps with Hungary, who he is eligible to represent through his grandparents.
Styles underwent minor surgery in January to remove his appendix and he is expected to make an imminent return to action.
Sunderland Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said: “Callum is an interesting player, who has the ability to play on the left side of central midfield or slightly wider in a full back or wing back role, so we feel his quality and flexibility will be a real benefit to us throughout the remainder of the season.
"Having reached an agreement in principle last week, we had an unavoidable delay due to Callum’s illness, but after reviewing his progress, we are now delighted that he’s here and we look forward to his imminent return to action.”
