Ronald Koeman reflects on Barcelona issues plus Frenkie de Jong injury
Ronald Koeman, former Barcelona manager, recently spoke at a charity golf tournament, casting a spotlight on several pressing issues at the La Liga side.
Among his remarks, he expressed significant concern over Frenkie de Jong's ongoing injury woes and offered his views on Barcelona's recent turmoil.
Koeman's comments on Frenkie de Jong were particularly alarming for fans. The Dutch midfielder has been sidelined since sustaining an ankle injury in a collision with Fede Valverde during El Clasico (21 April). Although there was initial optimism regarding his recovery, it has become evident that De Jong's return to full fitness is still a distant prospect.
Current Dutch national team coach, Koeman, revealed his conversations with De Jong, noting the player's growing anxiety about his situation. "I speak with him because we know each other well. He is genuinely concerned about his injury," Koeman stated.
"We had hoped he would make it to the tournament, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. It's a serious injury, and we need to see how it progresses. He's been struggling with form and rhythm, playing crucial matches despite not being fully fit."
Shifting his focus, Koeman addressed Barcelona's recent difficulties and the club's interest in Nico Williams. "Nico Williams is a fantastic player, and it's understandable why there is so much interest in him. He's a top-quality winger, an asset that any top team would benefit from. Whether these are just rumours or genuine intentions to secure him, I cannot say," he commented.
Koeman also criticised Barcelona's handling of their legends, highlighting a deeper issue within the club's management. "In recent years, Barcelona has struggled with how it has treated its club legends. It's crucial to take care of these figures before chasing after new signings.
"The club should be at the top, but the real problem lies with the board. Their approach has not been effective," Koeman asserted.
Regarding Barcelona's current managerial situation, Koeman spoke highly of Hansi Flick, the new coach. "It's challenging to grasp the dynamics of Barcelona if you're coming from outside. Flick is an excellent coach and a wonderful person. He proved his worth with Germany and Bayern Munich.
"However, Barcelona is a unique club, and I believe Joan Laporta will need to exercise patience with him. There is no perfect coach for this club, but a calm and confident approach is necessary."
Koeman also reflected on the departure of Xavi Hernandez. "It's a real shame. I know Xavi well, he's a great person and an excellent coach. Initially, he planned to leave at the end of the season, but there was pressure from the president to stay.
"It's disappointing to see him, Messi, and even myself not being part of the club anymore. It feels like the legends no longer have a place in the current board's plans."
As for his own future, Koeman indicated a desire to return to Barcelona in a different capacity. "I still have two years left with the Netherlands national team. My dream is to return to Barcelona, but not as a coach. I would love to contribute in a technical role under a different president."
