Real Madrid's defensive woes deepen as David Alaba faces ACL blow

Real Madrid have officially confirmed that seasoned centre-back David Alaba suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture during Sunday's commanding 4-1 victory over Villarreal.

Alaba's distressing injury unfolded late in the first-half, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the issue. After undergoing tests, the club disclosed the unfortunate news in a post-match statement: "After the tests carried out on our player David Alaba, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days."

This injury marks Alaba as the third Real Madrid player to succumb to an ACL injury this season, following Thibaut Courtois and fellow defender Eder Militao. Manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed his dismay, stating, "It's a shame, we are very sad because another player goes down. I have never had three ACL injuries in just a few months."

Despite the setback, Ancelotti emphasized the resilience of his squad, reflecting on their ability to exceed expectations amid challenges. Acknowledging the need for reinforcement, he remarked, "What the team has to do is hold on like we have done. We have done more than people expected. Despite the problems, this team endures."

Looking ahead, Ancelotti hinted at potential moves in the transfer market to bolster the defensive line. He also underscored the versatility of midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, labelling him as the "first option for centre-back" in emergency situations.

"Tchouameni is the first option for centre-back," Ancelotti confirmed. "It's not what we think of him, but in this moment of emergency, he can play there."

Real Madrid's resolve will face another test when they clash with Alaves at Mendizorrotza Stadium on December 21 in La Liga action.
