Newcastle United news: Eddie Howe wants to avoid 'extreme emotions' during difficult run of fixtures

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United

After three consecutive defeats, Newcastle's Premier League survival is again under pressure, but manager Eddie Howe has urged his side not to get caught up in the emotion of it all.

Eddie Howe's appointment at St James Park has been a blistering success so far, with the English manager helping to lift Newcastle out of the relegation zone and up to 15th.

However, with three successive defeats now putting an end to their remarkable run, perhaps they're not as safe as some may argue.
They sit seven points clear of Burnley in 18th, but the Clarets boast a game in hand and Newcastle face a difficult run of fixtures between now and the end of the season.
Wolves, Leicester and Crystal Palace are up next for the Magpies, before a crucial clash with 20th-placed Norwich City.
Following that, a tough treble against Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal makes for grim reading, before a blockbuster showdown with Burnley in the final gameweek.

It could make for a fascinating relegation dogfight over the next few weeks, but while speculation over Newcastle's safety has begun to cirlce again, Eddie Howe insists he will stay away from the emotional side and continue to think "logically and intelligently".

"Look, I embrace the wins and I love that positive feeling, and I want to see other people happy, I want to see our supporters enjoying success. That's my motivation to do the job," said Howe.
"But I don't think it's healthy for me to get caught up in it and become a person of extreme emotion, I don't think that's going to help my players at all, so staying calm, using my brain to think logically and intelligently, I think, are the things that I need.
"When we went on our unbeaten run, I was the same, probably sat here and you're thinking, 'Come on, give us a bit more'. But then on the other side of it, I'm exactly the same.
"It doesn't mean that I don't feel the emotion because I do. Losing for me is very painful, but it's important I don't get caught up in it because then I've got another game to prepare for, so it's making sure I do my job effectively to help the players perform in the next match."
Newcastle's latest defeat came at the hands of top-four chasing Tottenham, who put on a ruthless second half display as they secured a 5-1 win.
It was the heaviest defeat suffered by Howe's Newcastle side since his appointment, and the 44-year-old admitted he has treated his players slightly differently this week following their disappointing collapse.
"Certainly this week, without going into too much detail, I've maybe changed the way I've dealt with the players or certain situations because I didn't like what I saw in the second half and I think no-one connected with the club liked what they saw in the second half."
Newcastle are next in action on Friday night, when they host a Wolves side looking to leapfrog Manchester United in seventh. Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 BST.
