Newcastle 'prepared' to sell Saint-Maximin and Aston Villa are 'monitoring' situation

Allan Saint Maximin, Newcastle United vs Leeds United, Premier League

In a shock move, Newcastle United could be willing to sell French winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Saint-Maximin could leave the Magpies if they receive an offer of around £50million, and Aston Villa are believed to be one of the teams 'monitoring' the situation.

The 25-year-old has made an instant impact at St James' Park since joining from Nice in 2019 and at times, he has been the only player to keep Newcastle fans happy during a dark time under Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley.

The fans' favourite has five goals and three assists in 26 domestic games this season but next season is set to be a big season for both Newcastle and Villa - with are both aiming for European spots.

For Newcastle, they have an unlimited amount of wealth following their Saudi takeover so Eddie Howe is not in a position where he has to sell Saint-Maximin. And if he does, it won't be on the cheap with the Frenchman being contracted until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Newcastle spent big in the January transfer window, signing the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Under Eddie Howe, they have taken 20 points from their last 10 Premier League matches ahead of facing Tottenham and are fourth in the table when it comes to form. Only Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool have won more points.

The improvement by Howe has seen them climb the table and steer away from relegation. However, the Daily Mail's article also states that Newcastle could 'offload up to 10 players when the transfer window re-opens.'

For Villa, they are no longer near the bottom three after being just one point above when Steven Gerrard took over from Dean Smith.

However, after a positive start, it has been an inconsistent start to life at Villa Park despite the additions of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne. They have tasted three defeats on the spin, including a 2-1 loss to Wolves.
"I've got to fix it and I will fix it," Gerrard said after Saturday's defeat. "The players in the building have to help me fix it now, if not we will get players in who will help me fix it."

Coutinho's decision will be a big factor as to whether Villa go for Saint-Maximin though.

The Brazilian has produced moments of brilliance since arriving at Villa Park but it remains to be seen if he joins on a permanent basis.
Should he stay, Villa will instead look to bolster their options in the middle of the park with neither Douglas Luiz and Morgan Sanson impressing Gerrard.
Kalvin Phillips and Brighton's Yves Bissouma are two names that are on the radar of Gerrard and Villa.
