Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised a change in attitude from his players after their 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Manchester United had started the weekend bottom of the table after their four-goal humbling at Brentford compounded the home loss to Brighton, but Ten Hag's side responded with a display of determination, aggression and skill.

Anthony Elanga hit a post and soon set up Jadon Sancho to coolly score in a first half that ended with Lisandro Martinez preventing Bruno Fernandes from scoring an own goal.

United went 2-0 up in the 53rd minute. Half-time introduction Anthony Martial won the ball and sent Rashford racing through on goal. The homegrown forward beat Alisson and the goal cleared a VAR check for offside.

Ten Hag's men held out for victory after Liverpool's Mohamed Salah reduced the deficit late on.

"We can talk about tactical but it is all about attitude," ten Hag told Sky Sports.

"Now you see we bring attitude on the pitch and there was communication, there was a fighting spirit and there was a team and you can see what they can achieve because they can f****** play good football.
"I wanted a different approach, a different attitude and that is what they bring on the pitch, that is what makes me satisfied.
"It is just the start, we have to keep humble, we can play a lot better if we keep more composure. We have good players - now be a good team and then we will act. It is not always about what we said, I said we had to act and not talk a lot, make sure you are a team, battle and also be brave."

Manchester United will want to build on their win and Ten Hag is hoping the addition of Casemiro, who was unveiled before the game, will help.

"We were talking about leadership, today we had leadership on the pitch, he is one as well. He knows the game, he knows how to win, in his career he has won so many trophies and it is important to have that in the team," added ten Hag.

"Varane has it, Casemiro is another one, Ronaldo has it so you need some and it is like guidance for young players who didn't achieve now the trophies, because that is what we want to achieve so I am hoping their presence will be a huge stimulation for the rest."
Asked about his decision to drop Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo, Ten Hag added: "It is always difficult but I have decisions to make.
"I have a squad and we have to use the squad, we play 50/60 games and from game to game we will see what team we have to pick.
"I don't have to mention Harry Maguire and Ronaldo are amazing players and they will play a role in the future, the short (term) future as well."
