Man City and Real Madrid player ratings: Near perfection from Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva

Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City 26 Apr 2023

Four Manchester City players put on a near faultless display as the team thumped Real Madrid at the Etihad.

Manchester City put on an incredible performance as they thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 to seal their spot in the Champions League final.

Pep Guardiola's men earned praise for an outstanding team display, though it's fair to say that a few individuals certainly stood out.
Here, we take a look at the player ratings for both City and Real Madrid.

Manchester City

Ederson - 7

Barely threatened for the most part but did well to tip over a dipping David Alaba free-kick and some late chances. Excellent with the ball.

Kyle Walker - 9

Received a standing ovation for his first half dart back to dispossess rapid Vinicius Junior. Nullified him brilliantly.

Ruben Dias - 7

A solid presence at the back, cajoling team-mates and organising effectively.

John Stones - 8

The England international continues to blossom in his hybrid role.

Manuel Akanji - 7

Impressed on the left side of defence, keeping Dani Carvajal and Rodrygo quiet. His late header went in off Eder Militao.

Rodri - 8

A calming influence in front of the backline and capable of providing an attacking threat.

Ilkay Gundogan - 8

Fresh from netting a brace in City's win at Everton, the skipper continued his strong end to the season and led with aplomb.

Kevin De Bruyne - 9

Key in helping City outclass the reigning champions. Probed patiently until slipping in Silva to open the scoring and was involved heavily in two other goals.

Bernardo Silva - 9

Kept his cool to give City a deserved lead, then again to steer home a header. Tireless worker in and out of possession.

Jack Grealish - 9

A constant thorn in the side, the £100million player is brimming with confidence and attacking with directness.

Erling Haaland - 7

Unable to add to his 52 goals in all competitions but that was only due to Thibaut Courtois' outstanding display between the sticks.

Manchester City Subs

Riyad Mahrez (for Gundogan, 79) - 6

Added fresh legs with the tie beyond Madrid.

Phil Foden (for De Bruyne, 84) - 6

Like Mahrez, brought on to cause similar discomfort and provided the assist for City's fourth.

Julian Alvarez (for Haaland, 89) - 6

A late run around quickly turned into a fine, low finish to make it 4-0.

Real Madrid

Thibaut Courtois - 8

It would have been a greater scoreline was it not for last season's Champions League final man of the match.

Dani Carvajal - 4

The experienced right-back has appeared in five Champions League victories but looked miles off it against Grealish.

Eder Militao - 5

Came in for Antonio Rudiger as the only change to the first leg and struggled to get to grips with things.

David Alaba - 5

Toiled under the barrage of City attacks at centre-back. Forced Ederson into a smart save and moved to left-back.

Eduardo Camavinga - 5

One of the most talented young players in the world looked like a midfielder playing at left-back, but improved when eventually moved into his preferred role.

Luka Modric - 5

A veteran of five previous Champions League triumphs but was unable to impart his will on the game. Withdrawn to enable a change in backline personnel.

Federico Valverde - 4

Made his 200th Madrid appearance at the weekend and will want to forget his 201st.

Toni Kroos - 5

Rattled the crossbar with a thumping effort in an otherwise forgettable performance.

Rodrygo - 3

The Brazilian has come out of his shell this season but offered precious little attacking threat.

Vinicius Junior - 4

The most exciting player in the Madrid team got nothing out of Walker.

Karim Benzema - 4

The captain began the game at walking pace and upped the tempo, albeit without the requisite service.

Real Madrid Subs

Antonio Rudiger (for Modric, 64) - 6

Surprisingly dropped to the bench, the damage had been done when he came on.

Marco Asensio (for Kroos, 70) - 5

Did little of note.

Aurelien Tchouameni (for Camavinga, 80) - 5

Fresh legs in midfield as Carlo Ancelotti looked to stymie City.

Lucas Vazquez (for Carvajal, 80) - 5

In for booked Carvajal against slippery Grealish.

Dani Ceballos (for Rodrygo, 80) - 5

Part of triple change aimed at damage limitation.
