Luka Modric set to break long-standing Real Madrid record

Luka Modric, the evergreen Croatian midfielder, looks poised to shatter a long-standing record at Real Madrid during the 2024/25 La Liga season.

After a triumphant 2023/24 campaign that saw Los Blancos clinch both La Liga and the Champions League, the club has been actively reinforcing their squad during the transfer window.

Madrid made headlines by securing French superstar Kylian Mbappe recently, bringing the prolific forward to the Santiago Bernabeu. Additionally, Brazilian wonderkid Endrick, signed in 2022, is set to join the squad for the new season.

In a significant move, Real Madrid confirmed that Luka Modric had signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025.

A club statement read: "Real Madrid C.F. and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the contract of our captain, who will be linked to the club until 30 June 2025.

"Modric arrived at Real Madrid in 2012, and in his twelve seasons representing our shirt he has become a Real Madrid and world football legend."

At 39, Modric is already the oldest player to feature for Madrid in both La Liga and the European Cup. However, he is now on the brink of breaking another record.

Modric aims to surpass the legendary Ferenc Puskas, who played his final match for Madrid at 39 years and 38 days old in May 1966. If all goes according to plan, Modric will break this 58-year-old record on October 19 or 20, during Madrid's fixture against Celta Vigo at the Balaidos Stadium.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Modric, stating, "I've never had a problem with Modric. As well as being a top player, one of the best in the world, he's even more spectacular as a person. We've never had a problem, and we never will."

Real Madrid's pre-season preparations include high-profile matches against AC Milan, Barcelona, and Chelsea during their US tour. The upcoming season promises to be a historic one for both Modric and the club as they aim for further glory on the domestic and European stages.
