La Liga news: Diego Simeone believes Joao Felix can be 'very important' for Atletico
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone believes Joao Felix could still be an important player for the club despite rumours of his imminent departure.
The 23-year-old forward started Atleti's first seven games of the season, during Antoine Griezmann's injury spell, but once the preferred front man returned, Felix was benched.
Since his benching, Felix has not started a game again for Atleti.
This has led to widespread speculation that Felix is on his way out in January, or at the latest at the end of the season.
The young striker did, however, showcase his quality at the World Cup in Qatar, and Simeone reckons he could still become a key player.
"What matters to me is the team and he is important to the team," said Simeone during a press conference ahead of Thursday's clash with Elche.
"If he shows us what we saw in the World Cup, he will be very important.
"He has the condition and talent and the team needs his qualities."
Asked about working with Felix, Simeone added: "It's a good, working relationship.
"Since I've been at the club I've never stopped, beyond some differences that exist between people, and we can't agree on everything, looking to do the best by the club, until the last day whether it's me or the footballers. [It's about] Giving everyone's maximum."
