Leeds winger Willy Gnonto holds talks amid links to Everton, Newcastle - as Aston Villa exit race
Everton have held official talks with Leeds United’s Willy Gnonto, whilst Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also linked with a move.
Willy Gnonto is the subject of more intense transfer speculation this summer with Everton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa all credited with an interest this window.
The latest reports indicate that the Merseyside club are set to win the race, as the speedy winger held further talks with his potential new employer on Monday.
Leeds knocked back a bid of £25 million from the Toffees last year, demanding more money and refusing to buckle under the pressure of Gnonto’s behaviour.
The 20-year-old Italian international submitted a transfer request and refused to play and train, an act which he later apologised to fans for.
He went on to make 39 appearances, scoring eight goals and registering three assists in the Championship.
Despite previously holding out for a greater fee, it’s understood that Everton believe a sum in the region of £22 million could seal the deal.
With only two out-and-out wingers on their books, Sean Dyche needs at least one more option in wide areas.
His side managed 40 goals in 38 matches last term, the second worst goals per game ratio in the Premier League, and may need to add to that tally to survive this season.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Newcastle United are considering a late swoop to hijack the deal, but that’s yet to come to fruition.
Although Aston Villa made a soft enquiry earlier in the window, Jaden Philogene’s arrival likely ended their interest.
Leeds’ summer sale has raised more than £70 million, with Archie Gray, Luis Sinisterra, Marc Roca, Charlie Cresswell and Diego Llorente officially completing moves away, plus the imminent sale of Glen Kamara.
In return, the Whites have splashed out £10 million on the permanent signing of Joe Rodon whilst capturing Joe Rothwell on loan.
