Girona FC reportedly sign Donny van de Beek from Man Utd

Girona FC have announced the signing of Donny van de Beek from Manchester United, marking their most high-profile acquisition as they prepare for their debut in the Champions League.

According to a report by MARCA, the Catalan club secured the Dutch midfielder for a fee just under €1 million, with easily attainable add-ons raising the total to €5 million. More challenging performance-related clauses could push the final amount to €15 million.

Van de Beek has been on Girona's radar for some time. The club previously pursued him during the last winter transfer window, but the player opted for a loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

His stint in Germany allowed him to rediscover some of the form that once made him one of Europe's most sought-after talents during his time at Ajax. Real Madrid had shown interest, but it was Manchester United who eventually secured his signature for approximately €40 million.

However, Van de Beek's time in the Premier League has been anything but smooth. The midfielder, once a shining star in an Ajax team featuring the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, David Neres, and Daley Blind, struggled to replicate his performances at Manchester United. His former Ajax teammate, Blind, who also played a significant role in his development, likely provided some support during these challenging times.

Over the past three seasons, Van de Beek has featured in fewer than a dozen matches each season, including loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt. His struggle for consistent playing time has raised questions about his ability to return to his best form. However, Girona's head coach, Michel Sanchez, believes he can help Van de Beek revive his career.

"Donny is a player with immense talent and potential," said Sanchez. "He has shown what he can do at the highest level with Ajax, and we believe he can reach those heights again here at Girona.

"Our goal is to provide him with the right environment and support to thrive."

Van de Beek's addition comes at a crucial time for Girona, as they gear up for their first-ever Champions League campaign. The club are optimistic that the Dutchman can be a key figure in their midfield, bringing experience and creativity to the team.

Van de Beek's journey in Spain will undoubtedly be closely watched by football enthusiasts, with many hoping he can once again become the player who dazzled on the European stage.
