Enzo Maresca laments financial rules forcing Chelsea to sell academy stars

Chelsea's new boss, Enzo Maresca, has revealed that the club are being compelled to sell their academy players due to the Premier League's financial regulations.

The Profit and Sustainability rules, designed to ensure clubs operate within their financial means, have left Chelsea with no choice but to part ways with some of their brightest homegrown talents.

In recent years, Chelsea have bid farewell to several players who have come through their youth system.

The latest to be set for departure is Conor Gallagher, a move that has ignited a wave of anger among Chelsea supporters.

Previous academy players who have been sold include Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount, Ian Maatsen, Lewis Hall, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Maresca, who took over managerial duties recently, has expressed his frustration at the situation.

"This is not Chelsea's problem. These are the rules," said Maresca.

"All the clubs at this moment are compelled to sell players from the academy because of the rules. It's all of the Premier League clubs' problems."

Asked if Chelsea will still focus on developing players, he added; "Absolutely. I also think the intention of the club is not to sell players from the academy, but it is the rules at the end that you have to do it.

"It's not only us; it's all the Premier League clubs. It's a shame because in Italy we have Francesco Totti at Roma, 20 years with the same club.

"A one-club man - we love that in football; the fans want to see that. But with the rules now, it is different from the past."

Despite the turmoil over player sales, Chelsea are continuing their pre-season preparations with friendlies against Real Madrid and Inter scheduled for this week.

The team's 2024-25 Premier League campaign kicks off with a home game against Manchester City on August 18, marking the beginning of what promises to be a challenging season for the Blues.
