Edin Terzic wants strong performance from Borussia Dortmund against Newcastle

Last season's Bundesliga runners-up having taken just a single point from their opening two fixtures, a 2-0 defeat at Paris St Germain and a 0-0 home draw with AC Milan.

They will run out at St James' Park on Wednesday evening to face the group leaders, who demolished PSG 4-1 on Tyneside last time out, but knowing how valuable a win could be.

Asked about Newcastle's good form, Terzic, Slaven Bilic's number two during his time at West Ham, said: "You're right, but it's not just the last couple of weeks.

"What they did last season is part of that, and the whole history and the investment, the money that's come in.

"They've reacted perhaps differently and been very smart in the transfer market and built a team over 18 months, and they've qualified for the Champions League through the Premier League, one of the toughest leagues.

"When you look at this group that we're in, you can see the strength of it. They're top of the group at the moment, but only three points ahead [of Dortmund], only two games are gone, so it's really tight.

"Tomorrow we need to produce a very good performance so that we can earn a victory."

Newcastle are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions heading into the fixture, but 1997 European champions Dortmund's domestic form has also been impressive.

Their 1-0 home victory over Werder Bremen on Friday evening was their fifth league success on the trot, a return which leaves them just two points adrift of early leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

The defeat in Paris represents their only reverse in 11 in all competitions so far this season, although skipper and former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can admits their away form has let them down at times.

Can said: "It's a chance tomorrow to show what we can do. Perhaps away from home in the past, we've not performed to our best – I'm not sure why that was last season – but obviously tomorrow gives us that chance to change things.

"In the Bundesliga, we have been doing well and we have confidence. We approach tomorrow's game looking to win – and of course, we need the points."
