Crystal Palace are keen to sign Maxence Lacroix as Marc Guehi eyes Newcastle

Crystal Palace are bracing for life after Marc Guehi as the talented defender inches closer to a record-breaking move to Newcastle United.

In response, the Eagles have intensified their pursuit of VfL Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix.

Marc Guehi, 24, is keen on a switch to St James' Park, where Newcastle United hope to finalise a transfer agreement.

Despite no deal being agreed by Tuesday's close of play, Newcastle are expected to return with a fresh offer to secure Guehi's services, aiming to strike a price agreement soon. This potential transfer is set to cost Newcastle a club record fee.

As Guehi's departure looms, Crystal Palace have turned their attention to Maxence Lacroix, who currently plies his trade with VfL Wolfsburg.

Lacroix, also 24, is in the final year of his contract, and despite Wolfsburg's attempts to extend his stay, the defender appears ready for a new challenge.

Wolfsburg's managing director, Peter Christiansen, has confirmed Lacroix's readiness to move on.

"You have to consider all scenarios," he told German publication Kicker.

"Without wanting to blame anyone, it is never ideal when a player is entering the last year of his contract.

"But that is the situation; we are talking to Maxence; we would like to keep him. But the player and those around him also have their thoughts and ideas. And then we will see what happens."

Lacroix has been in regular contact with Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who personally reached out to the Frenchman at the end of last season.

This direct communication underscores Palace's serious interest in securing Lacroix as a replacement for Guehi.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's transfer dealings are not limited to Guehi. The club is also close to finalising a deal for Sheffield United's William Osula, marking a busy summer of strengthening their squad.
