Chris Sutton labels fans who threw broken glass onto pitch as 'absolute scumbags'

Joe Hart

Ange Postecoglou said a 'couple of idiots' were to blame after one of Celtic’s backroom staff required stitches after getting hit by a glass bottle in the 2-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

The incident happened as players, officials and staff made their way up the tunnel at half-time following a pulsating 45 minutes.

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart complained to officials after returning to the pitch after the interval and spotting the pieces of glass.

Broken glass was spotted in Hart's box, prompting a group of stewards to clear it and inspect the penalty box to ensure it was safe for the game to begin.
A spokesperson for Celtic said: "We can confirm that a member of our backroom staff was struck by a glass bottle.
"He required urgent medical treatment and stitches to a head wound. The matter is now in the hands of Police Scotland."
Postecoglou said: "I think he is OK, he had a couple of stitches.
"It is disappointing because this is a fixture that gets beamed around the world, and stands on its own.
"Two teams going at it, first and second spot. You don't need a couple of idiots ruining it."

Sutton slams glass incident

Ex-Celtic ace Chris Sutton said that despite the important win, the match will now be remembered for other reasons.

"Absolute scumbags throwing glass bottles on to the pitch. How low can some people go. This is how this game will be remembered now."
It comes after Ibrox Stadium was targeted in a late-night 'vandalism spree'.
"Police responded around 2.45am on Sunday, 3 April, 2022 following vandalism at Ibrox Stadium, Govan," a Police Scotland statement read.
"Three men aged 18, 22 and 25 have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Enquiries remain ongoing."

Celtic close in on SPL title

Celtic opened up a significant six-point gap over Rangers at the top of the cinch Premiership with a 2-1 comeback win at Ibrox.

On-loan Gers' midfielder Aaron Ramsey scored the opener just three minutes into his debut Old Firm game but Hoops' Tom Rogic equalised four minutes later to make it 1-1.

Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers scored the decisive goal before the end of the first half and Rangers were unable to respond.
Six fixtures remain and it includes another Old Firm meeting at Parkhead - as well as another clash between the two Glasgow giants in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.
As it stands, Ange Postecoglou's side are on course to bring the title back across the city, helped by a goal-difference advantage of 16.
It's a massive win for us, there are not many games left so every win is important," said Carter-Vickers.
"All season we've shown that character, we keep pushing and that's what we did today.
"It was difficult, the fans were all screaming for them and sometimes it takes a while to adjust, but after that we played well."
Giovanni van Bronckhorst suffered another Old Firm defeat since becoming Rangers manager but refused to admit defeat in the title race.
"We are two teams fighting for the championship and when you lose against your direct opponent for the race it's difficult.
"It's not over but this result makes it more difficult for us.
"We started really well and when you lose it's a big disappointment.
"We started well, scored an early goal and it gives you (the) confidence to get in the game.
"Second half, we tried to push and had chances, I think we played almost the whole second half in their half.
"You always know in transition moments they will be dangerous but we also created some good chances to get the equaliser. In the end we failed."
Rangers face Braga in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie in Portugal on Thursday - their boss Carlos Carvalhal was watching from the stands - but their domestic aspirations suffered a huge blow at the hands of their bitter rivals.
