Bayern Munich edge past Union Berlin in Bundesliga showdown

Raphael Guerreiro of Bayern Munich celebrates scoring

Bayern Munich secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Union Berlin on Wednesday night, significantly narrowing the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

The encounter started with Bayern pressing for an early breakthrough, as Frederik Ronnow thwarted attempts from Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano following a corner. Despite Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane posing threats in the first half, Bayern struggled to unlock Union's sturdy defence.

However, the second half witnessed a dramatic turn of events. Just a minute after the restart, Raphael Guerreiro seized an opportunity, slotting home a brilliant finish after Harry Kane's strike ricocheted off the woodwork. Although Bayern celebrated what seemed like a second goal from Kane in the 55th minute, it was disallowed due to Sane's offside position.

Union Berlin, battling to find openings, nearly levelled the score in the 72nd minute, with Manuel Neuer denying Jerome Roussillon's attempt. The match saw a heated moment when Union coach Nenad Bjelica clashed with Sane over a throw-in decision, resulting in Bjelica's expulsion from the touchline.

Despite late pressure from Union, Bayern held firm to secure the crucial victory. With this win, Bayern remain in pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen, trailing by four points after 18 league games, while Union Berlin find themself hovering just above the relegation zone in the 15th spot.

This tense showdown underscores Bayern's determination to maintain their title challenge, setting the stage for an enthralling Bundesliga race in the coming weeks.
