Atletico Madrid confirm Memphis Depay set to miss La Liga clash against Sevilla
Atletico Madrid have confirmed that forward Memphis Depay is nursing a troubling right thigh injury, rendering him unfit for the highly anticipated La Liga showdown against Sevilla this Sunday.
Memphis has now firmly established himself as a key figure in Atletico's offensive line-up, overtaking Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa. However, the Dutch striker's promising run was abruptly halted during the first-half of the La Liga tussle against Rayo Vallecano on Monday, due to persistent muscle distress. However, Atletico powered through to a 7-0 victory despite this setback.
Although marked by intermittent performances, coach Diego Simeone underscores his conviction that Memphis effectively partners with Antoine Griezmann upfront. Their synergy in the attacking third is evident, though hindered by Memphis' persistent physical setbacks.
The Spanish club formally confirmed the injury via a medical statement. Presently nursing a right thigh ailment, the 29-year-old will undergo an extensive recuperation regimen contingent on his day-to-day progress.
"Our athlete will commence targeted physiotherapy sessions, coupled with dedicated rehabilitation training while closely tracking his development. Recent diagnostics, conducted Tuesday morning, confirm a muscular ailment in his right thigh," the club's official website reported.
While the duration of his absence remains uncertain, it appears probable that the striker will sit out the upcoming La Liga clash against Sevilla at the Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday. A potential return looms on the horizon, with Valencia poised to host Atletico on 17 September.
As Memphis's availability dwindles, his likely replacement will be Alvaro Morata.
