Arsenal news: French international Matteo Guendouzi completes permanent move to Ligue 1 club

Olympique de Marseille's Matteo Guendouzi

French international Matteo Guendouzi has completed his move away from Arsenal as he joins Ligue 1 outfit, Marseille.

The midfielder was sent to Stade Velodrome on loan last season and, as part of the deal, the French outfit had the option of making the move permanent.Β

Marseille have now acted on that option and completed the deal for the 23-year-old, with Arsenal confirming the news on Friday.
The move already appeared to have been confirmed by the Ligue 1 outfit, who included the player in their merchandise marketing campaign ahead of the new season.
Guendouzi joined the Gunners in 2018 and made an impressive start to his spell at the Emirates Stadium.
However, the Frenchman ultimately fell out of favour with manager Mikel Arteta and subsequently spent time away from London.
During the 2020/21 season, Guendouzi played for Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga where he scored two goals in 24 appearances.
The following season, Arsenal sent the player to Marseille where the player competed in 56 games across all competitions and bagged five goals in the process.
Guendouzi played in every Ligue 1 fixture last season and helped the team to a second-placed finish and Champions League qualification.
The Frenchman follows in the footsteps of former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette who also moved to Ligue 1 - linking up with Lyon.
In a statement, the club said: "Everyone at Arsenal thanks Matteo for his contribution during his time with us and wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career."
