Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer has extended his contract with the Bundesliga giants, ensuring his stay at Signal Iduna Park until 2026.

This announcement came from the club on Friday, highlighting Meyer's importance to the team both on and off the pitch.

Meyer, now 33, initially joined Dortmund in July 2022 from SSV Jahn Regensburg on a free transfer.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl expressed his satisfaction with the new deal, stating, "I am delighted that we have been able to extend Alex's contract for another year. He is an outstanding goalkeeper, an absolute team player, and an exemplary professional who gives his all in every training session, is always ready and performs when we need him."

Kehl further emphasized Meyer's impact within the squad, describing him as a leader who brings composure and confidence to the team. "With his positive attitude, he also plays an important role in the dressing room, exuding leadership, composure, and confidence.

"For us, Alex is the best reserve goalkeeper in the Bundesliga," Kehl added.

Meyer has predominantly served as the backup to first-choice goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but he made nine appearances for Dortmund last season, showcasing his skills and readiness whenever called upon.

His commitment to the club and his teammates has never been in question, and this new contract underscores his dedication to the Black and Yellows.

Reflecting on his new contract, Meyer expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for continuing his journey with Dortmund. "I feel very comfortable in Dortmund, I feel very appreciated by the people in charge, the coaching staff, my teammates, the staff, and the fans," he said.

"It's still not a matter of course for me to wear the BVB jersey. That's why I'm happy to be a part of this club every day."

Meyer's ambitions with Dortmund remain high, as he looks forward to achieving further success with the team. "We've been quite successful in the last two years, but my big goal is still to celebrate a title with the BVB family at Borsigplatz at the end of the season. That's what I'm working towards together with my teammates," Meyer shared.

Dortmund's 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign is set to kick off on 24 August against Eintracht Frankfurt at Signal Iduna Park.
