AFCON 2023: Emmanuel Eboue praises Emerse Fae for creating positivity in Ivory Coast squad

Ivory Coast celebrate

Former Ivory Coast footballer Emmanuel Eboue has lauded interim coach Emerse Fae for instilling a "positive atmosphere" within the Elephants squad.

The Ivorian team took decisive action by parting ways with manager Jean-Louis Gasset after a lackluster performance in Group A resulted in a third-place finish, leaving the tournament hosts teetering on the edge of elimination.

However, under Fae's guidance, Ivory Coast managed to advance to the quarter-finals after securing a spot as one of the top four third-placed teams.

Despite an unsuccessful attempt to persuade Herve Renard to return as coach, Fae steered the team to a thrilling victory over reigning champions Senegal in the round of 16, clinching the win through a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

With their quarter-final showdown against Mali looming, the Elephants are poised to continue their quest for glory.

"Our country normally doesn't need any coaching because all the players are good," Eboue told the BBC World Service.

"They all play in good clubs in Europe so we just need someone who can talk to them nicely and bring a positive atmosphere to the group.

"This team were down and now they are up. They are so happy to play as a team and they have more confidence because they beat Senegal.

"I know [Emerse] having played against him and with him, so I am happy for him."
