The Most Popular Soccer Teams in America

Soccer has grown into a hugely popular sport in the United States over the last few decades - here we take a look at the most popular teams playing the 'beautiful game' in the USA.
10. Sporting Kansas City
Kansas City claimed their only Supporters Shield, given to the team with the most points in the regular season, in 2000.
American keeper Tony Meola won the league's MVP award, as he set league records with 16 clean sheets, and by going 681 minutes without conceding a goal.
Sporting Kansas City was originally known as the Kansas City Wizards and went by that name for a long time before being rechristened Sporting Kansas City.
The team was one of the ten charter teams in the MLS in June 1995. Since then and their subsequent renaming, the team has been competing in the MLS for honors. And as far as titles go, they have been relatively successful, winning two MLS Cups.
Similarly, they have a joint record of four US Open Cups to their name, along with the Chicago Fire and Seattle. Additionally, they also claimed their solitary Supporters' Shield in 2000.
As part of their rich history, they had the legendary US Men's National Team Goalkeeper, Tony Meola on their roster for a few years. In his time at the club, he won the league's most valuable player award in the same year he won the Supporters' Shield.
9. Austin FC
Only founded in 2018, Austin FC has gone on to become one of the most popular soccer teams in the United States.
The announcement of the MLS franchise in Austin was met with fanfare and jubilation as the 10th most populous city had been waiting patiently for its maiden professional sports franchise.
Having been founded in 2018, the franchise had to wait a little longer to start competing in Major League Soccer. However, the team has become the darling of many Austinites and American soccer fans.
Their soaring popularity in a short period of time saw them attract many sponsors and partners including sports betting company, FanDuel.
FanDuel is one of the biggest sportsbooks in the United States, and its reputation has been bolstered by its various offerings and a new player betting bonus.
Their $1,000 sign-up bonus is one the most valuable bonuses for betting enthusiasts in many states across the US.
Now, the increased popularity is yielding handsome dividends, resulting in a partnership that birthed the FanDuel retail outlet at the Audi stadium home of Austin FC.
Soccer fans can go on to place bets at the outlet, before seeing their favorite team in action, and of course, new bettors have a chance to claim the FanDuel Bonus.
8. Columbus Crew
Columbus Crew is one of the most renowned MLS franchises. With a very good support base, the Crews - as they are fondly known - have gone on to win some titles in their history.
They have claimed two MLS Cup titles, with the most recent coming in 2020. The Columbus-based outfit has also won the Supporters' Shield three times, coming out tops in 2004, 2008, and 2009.
They also have one US Open nestled in their title cabinet, plus they have made appearances at the CONCACAF level.
7. Seattle Sounders
The Seattle side has a very prominent history in American soccer. Despite being founded in 2007, they have established themselves as one of the top teams in America.
The Sounders have a very robust fan base similar to those in Europe, and they have been rewarded with two MLS Cups in the past seven seasons. Additionally, they have won US Open Cups plus a Supporters Shield.
Another thing they have going for them is that they have made it through to the playoffs in all their years of existence.
6. New England Revolution
Founded in 1996, the New England Revolution has become a mainstay in the MLS. They won the US Open Cup in 2007 and made five appearances in the final of the MLS Cup.
However, they couldn't get their hands on the title, giving them an unwanted record of the most final appearances in the competition without a win.
But they did enjoy some success when they won the Supporters Shield in 2021.
5. DC United
DC United lay claim to being one of the inaugural teams in the MLS. They dominated the early era of the league claiming three MLS Cups, two Supporters Shield, US Open Cup in that run.
They are also a past winner of the CONCACAF Champions League, making them one of two MLS teams to win the competition.
Although not anywhere close to challenging for titles in recent times, their 13 trophy hauls put them amongst the best-known soccer teams in America.
4. LA Galaxy
Another team that can lay claim to being a founding member of the MLS. They have been very successful with multiple titles to show for their run over the years.
They hold the record for most MLS Cups with five trophies in nine appearances. Multiple Supporters Shield and US Open Cups, and of course, the second American team to win the CONCACAF Champions League.
Galaxy has been able to lure global soccer stars such as David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Steven Gerrard, and many others to their club.
3. New York Cosmos
The New York Cosmos are certainly one of the teams that popularized soccer in the United States and they were one of the first teams to attract world soccer icons.
Brazilian legend Pele arrived in 1975 and was later joined by the likes of Carlos Alberto, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, and many others.
The team won five NASL titles between 1972 and 1982. And that success paved the way for more superstars like George Best to join the club.
However, the club experienced some financial difficulties and folded up.
2. U.S Men's National Team
Unlike most of the teams on this list that are football clubs, the USMNT is one of two exceptions.
The team is the second most popular soccer team in the U.S.
The team has played in 10 World Cups, but their best performance was at the 2002 World Cup where they reached the quarter-finals.
On the CONCACAF scene, the team has won 7 Gold cups, with the latest coming in 2021.
1. U.S Women's National Team
Without a shadow of a doubt, the USWNT is the most successful soccer team in the history of the game in the United States.
They have played at every Women's World Cup reaching the semi-finals in appearances with four titles to show for it.
Additionally, they have claimed the Olympic Gold four times along with eight Gold Cup titles.
