Most days are great days when you are a sports fan, but both Liverpool and Man City fans have been forced to say goodbye to legends on this day in years gone by.

On this day in sport

1970: Bobby Charlton scored his 49th and last goal for England, against Colombia in Bogota, in a warm-up game for the World Cup in Mexico. His record was broken by Wayne Rooney in 2015.

1990: Monica Seles ended Steffi Graf's record of 66 consecutive victories when she beat her 6-4 6-3 in the final of the German Open.

1992: Barcelona made it third time lucky as they won the European Cup, with Ronald Koeman scoring the only goal against Sampdoria at Wembley. In their previous two appearances in the final, the Catalan side had lost to Benfica in 1961 and Steaua Bucharest in 1986.

1996: After playing more than 650 games and scoring 346 goals for Liverpool, striker Ian Rush left Anfield on a free transfer to join Leeds.

2002: Scotland suffered their fourth successive defeat under new boss Berti Vogts when they were beaten 2-0 by South Africa in Hong Kong, making the German the first ever Scotland manager to lose his opening four matches in charge of the national side.

2008: Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton was jailed for six months at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting charges of assault and affray in relation to a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the city in December.

2013: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced coach Jose Mourinho would leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. The Portuguese rejoined former club Chelsea on June 3.

2019: Premier League champions Manchester City held a victory parade, with Vincent Kompany bidding an emotional farewell to the club in front of 100,000 fans.
