Harry Maguire’s iconic moments for Leicester, Manchester United and England

Sheffield-born centre-back Harry Maguire has had to work hard to reach the top of the game but now finds himself captaining Manchester United.

Known for his no-nonsense style of play, Maguire boasts excellent aeriel ability and is quick to read the game from the defensive line.

These on-field attributes paired with his leadership ability encouraged Manchester United to sign him for £80million from Leicester City - making him the most expensive defender of all time.

Now a pivotal player for both club and country, Planet Sport looks at some of the standout moments in the extraordinary career of Harry Maguire.

Player of the Season awards

After making 100 appearances for the Blades by the time he was 19, Harry Maguire had a number of clubs circling for his signature.

Hull City won the race to sign the highly-rated defender and he would impress for the East Yorkshire club, adding their 2016/17 Player of the Season award to his individual trophy haul.

First Foxes goal

Eight days after his debut appearance for the Midlands club, he netted his first goal in the Premier League. Leicester defeated newly-promoted Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0, with Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki opening the scoring early on.

The lead was doubled by Maguire who headed home from a Riyad Mahrez corner at the back post to ensure victory on his home debut.

Brick wall for England

Shortly after his first Leicester goal, the commanding defender received his first international call-up from England boss Gareth Southgate.

Maguire took to international soccer quickly and kept clean sheets in his first four appearances for the Three Lions. Even Europe's elite - Germany, Brazil and the Netherlands - failed to breach the defence manned by Maguire.

Breaking his international duck

After just a handful of appearances, he was called up to England's 2018 World Cup squad.

He proved an influential figure as England made it to the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time since 1996.

He stole the headlines in the quarter-final, powerfully heading home to open the scoring against Sweden.

The headed goal was Maguire's first in an England shirt and set them on their way to a 2-0 win.

World's most expensive defender

The deal agreed between Manchester United and Leicester City in August 2019 surpassed the £75million Liverpool paid Southampton for centre-back Virgil van Dijk a year earlier.

Maguire signed a six-year deal at United and made his debut against Chelsea in a 4-0 win. He quickly quietened talk of his price tag, earning the man-of-the-match award thanks to a dominant performance.

Becoming Manchester United captain

Therefore, it was no surprise to see him named as club captain only half a season after joining the Red Devils. He would replace Inter Milan-bound Ashley Young in January 2019 as captain and took the responsibility in his stride.

Just a mere nine days after being appointed club captain, he broke his Manchester United duck, scoring a superb goal from range against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup during a comfortable 6-0 win.

71 consecutive matches

Since making his debut for Manchester United, Maguire has rarely missed a game for his club.

The defender equalled the club record, held by centre-back Gary Pallister, for most consecutive games played without being substituted on April 25, 2021 - a staggering 71 matches.

Maguire failed to surpass Pallister's mark, however, as he had to be substituted in the next match against Aston Villa after injuring ankle ligaments.

Since then, Maguire's main priority was to be fit for this summer's European Championship. He was named in the squad but was limited to a place on the bench for the first two group games against Croatia and Scotland.

However, Gareth Southgate's selection of Maguire was justified upon his return against the Czech Republic - Maguire performed excellently and helped England to their third clean sheet of the tournament.
