Harry Kane’s most iconic moments for Tottenham and England

Since bursting onto the Premier League scene in 2014, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has established himself as one of the most prolific finishers in the world.

However, while he boasts an abundance of individual honours, major trophies for both club and country have eluded Kane.

Golden boots, magical goals and remarkable records - Planet Sport takes a look at Kane's most iconic moments.

Quickest player to 20 UCL goals

In 2019, Harry Kane became the quickest player to reach 20 goals in the Champions League.

Kane’s record is made all the more impressive when compared to some of the world’s most clinical goalscorers.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, had to feature 40 and 56 times respectively before netting their 20th goal. It's not as if Kane's faced easier opposition, either, having scored against the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus on his way to the milestone.

A record-breaking qualifying campaign

England had an excellent qualification campaign for Euro 2020, finishing top of the table with 21 points from eight games.

He scored in every single game during the qualification process, becoming the first Englishman to do so. He also equalled the record for most goals scored for England in a calendar year, which dates back to George Hilsdon in 1908 and Dixie Dean in 1927.

North London derby form 

Arsenal will no doubt be sick of the sight of Kane, given his remarkable record in the north London derby. The forward has found the back of the net 11 times in just 15 meetings against the Gunners. 

Arguably his greatest goal in the tie came in a 2-2 draw in 2016. Kane picked up the ball by the corner flag, took a step towards the edge of the box before striking a beautiful curling effort into the far corner.

Winning the Golden Boot

Harry Kane became only the second Englishman to finish top of the scoring charts at a FIFA World Cup, with Gary Lineker being the other man to do so in 1986. Kane hit six goals at the 2018 tournament in Russia, where England reached the semi-finals.

Kane, who wore the captain’s armband, opened his account just 11 minutes into the group stages as England faced Tunisia and, after being pegged back by the country ranked significantly lower than them, the Three Lions rescued a victory through Kane’s 91st-minute winner.

His next three came in a 6-0 demolition of Panama - two were from the penalty spot and the other, a fortunate deflection. His sixth and final goal also came from 12 yards in the round-of-16 victory over Colombia.

200 goal milestone

Kane scored his 200th goal in a Spurs shirt in November 2020 in just his 300th game for the club. He is one of just three men to have hit the 200-goal milestone with Tottenham, alongside Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Smith.

Kane has surpassed Smith, who finished with a tally of 208, but he still has some way to go if he wants to catch Greaves on 266. For the time being, Greaves has a superior goals-per-game ratio, but with Kane having time on his side, there's every chance he can make his way to the top.

The 200th goal in Kane’s entire career - including loan spells - came in July 2020 after 350 appearances, and that record looks even more impressive when you stand him next to some of the modern-day big-hitters.

It took Cristiano Ronaldo 379 games to reach the same tally in club soccer, while Sergio Aguero needed 396 appearances. Kane achieved the record almost 100 games quicker than Wayne Rooney did, too.

100 Premier League goals

The '100 club' is made up of an elite group of players who have scored a century of goals in the Premier League and Kane secured his membership in April 2020.

The goal came in quite extraordinary circumstances, too, in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield. Kane had already had the chance to convert from the penalty spot earlier in the game, but was denied by Loris Karius.

Celebrating in Ajax

In May 2019, Spurs pulled off one of the greatest Champions League comebacks in recent history as they turned around a two-goal deficit to beat Ajax in the semi-final. 

Kane missed the crucial tie due to ankle ligament damage, but when Lucas Moura scored the winning goal in the 95th minute, the Spurs striker miraculously seemed to forget all about his injury.

Seeing the ball hit the back of the net clearly numbed his pain as he managed to sprint from the sidelines to celebrate with his teammates. It may not have been the smartest idea, but it was a great show of passion nonetheless.

Unfortunately for Kane however, the 2019 final proved to be another 'nearly' moment in his career, as Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi's goal handed the Reds a 2-0 victory.

Euro 2020 final

An opening grudge match against 2018 heart-breakers, Croatia, was a fitting way for Gareth Southgate's side to kick off the tournament, and a 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadium was enough to send the nation into raptures.

A goalless draw to rivals Scotland and a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic was enough to see England out of their group. The only concern for the Three Lions being that their talisman Kane was yet to get off the mark.

However, Kane rediscovered his shooting boots in the round-of-16 clash against Germany, and then bolstered his tally further with a brace against Ukraine.

Having tripped up in the semi-finals three years prior, Harry Kane's extra-time penalty was enough for England to avoid similar heartbreak against Denmark, and take his tournament tally up to four.

However, even the Wembley crowd wasn't enough to carry England to European glory, and despite Kane scoring first in the penalty shootout, the Three Lions lost the final in dramatic fashion to Italy.

World Cup penalty miss

Kane took the blame for England's World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of France after he missed a late penalty kick that would have forced extra time.

"I am gutted, the team are gutted. We had full belief that we could achieve something special at this World Cup but it came down to small details."

Tottenham's outright record scorer

Kane moved out on his own as Tottenham's record goalscorer, overtaking Jimmy Greaves' mark of 266 with the opener against Manchester City in a Premier League clash in early February 2023.
