The stats and tip of the day as Manchester Utd head to struggling West Brom

West Brom's Youssuf Mulumbu and Man Utd's Wayne Rooney

Manchester United are looking to claw themselves back into the title race this weekend as they travel to West Bromwich Albion, a team they've enjoyed plenty of success against recently.

Having needed extra time to beat West Ham United in the FA Cup on Tuesday, Manchester United are hoping to get the job done in much more comfortable fashion at The Hawthorns this Sunday (kick off 14:00 GMT).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side currently sit second in the Premier League table, while Sam Allardyce's West Brom rooted in the relegation zone. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Robin van Persie, West Brom's home ground holds some good memories for Manchester United fans.

Stat Attack

Man United have won 57 of their 133 meetings with West Brom, scoring 234 goals in the process.

It gives the Red Devils a win rate of just under 43%, losing 44 and drawing 32 of their games against the men from the Midlands.

The Old Trafford club's most recent trip to The Hawthorns came in December 2017, as former Baggie Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard scored to render Gareth Barry's goal a mere consolation.

Since 2000, United have tasted defeat just five times in 27 clashes, with the last loss in the 2017/18 season when Jay Rodriguez's goal helped hand the title to Manchester City.

Sadly for the Baggies it didn't secure survival for West Brom as they slipped back into the Championship.

Having narrowly beaten West Brom 1-0 at the Old Trafford earlier this season, Planet Sport takes a look at some of United's best performances over the Baggies in the last twenty years.

Top five performances

West Bromwich Albion 0-5 Manchester United

Premier League
January 27, 2009
A record breaker to begin with. United made it 11 successive Premier League clean sheets whilst they earned a five star victory.
It was the forwards who took the limelight as Ronaldo struck twice to add to goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Nemanja Vidic.
Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar usurped Petr Cech's record by going 1,032 minutes without conceding a top flight strike, but had little to do for this 90 as Sir Alex Ferguson's side took no prisoners.
West Brom went down to 10 men five minutes before the break after Paul Robinson's crunching tackle on Ji-Sung Park.
Tony Mowbray's side were relegated a few months later as the Red Devils triumphed to their third consecutive title.
Manchester United 4-0 West Bromwich Albion
Premier League
October 18, 2008

Sticking with the 2008/09 season and a stunning second half display from Fergie's slow-starting side.

Mowbray's outfit were well in the contest for the first half, and Ferguson may well have got the hairdryer out to liven a few of his players up at half-time.

Whatever happened in the changing room it worked wonders. Ronaldo, Berbatov and Nani all netted after the shaven headed Wayne Rooney (still furious following his first half effort being ruled out by referee Mark Halsey) scored to secure three points at Old Trafford.

It was an important result, too, as the European champions sat in eighth place before kick-off and rivals Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool had all won earlier.

Manchester United 3-0 West Bromwich Albion

United had a festive feast at Old Trafford as they put their own legend Bryan Robson's team to the sword.
Following a commendable 30 minutes of containment, Rooney's marker Robinson, who had done well to frustrate the Red Devils' forwards in the first half, received lengthy treatment for a head injury.
Shortly after he was stretchered off, Paul Scholes took advantage and scored before Rio Ferdinand headed home in additional time.
Ruud van Nistelrooy converted Alan Smith's cross in the second half, beating Polish goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak, who Ferguson would sign the following summer.
Robson's team couldn't beat the drop like their famous great escape on the final day of the previous campaign.
Jose Mourinho's Chelsea who would be crowned champions as Ferguson suffered his third season without the top-flight title.
West Bromwich Albion 0-3 Manchester United
Premier League
March 8, 2014
A rare highlight of the short David Moyes era with three Englishmen on the scoresheet.
Having been beaten 2-1 by the Baggies at Old Trafford earlier in the season, United got revenge and bounced back from midweek Champions League embarrassment against Olympiakos.
Phil Jones got the Red Devils off and running with a header against Pepe Mel's men, before Rooney and Danny Welbeck scored in the second half.
The match was closer than the scoreline suggested, as van Persie was fortunate to escape a red card.
West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United

We couldn't leave this one out, could we?
The Hawthorns isn't just a treasured destination for Man United due to results. It was also the ground where Ferguson ended his 26 years in charge of the Red Devils - and he'd never had a game like this one.
Manchester United were in cruise control - 3-0 up on the half hour mark - but then came the chaos.
West Brom's James Morrison and substitute Lukaku scored five minutes before and after half-time respectively.

Despite van Persie and Javier Hernandez making it 2-5 with 10 minutes to go, Chelsea loanee Lukaku bagged another two, either side of a Youssouf Mulumbu strike, to secure this memorable result.

At full-time, all four stands applauded a sensational spectacle and waved goodbye to Ferguson who enjoyed 13 PL titles and one bonkers final farewell.

Tip of the Fixture

Allardyce's West Brom have failed to make their home a fortress so far during his short reign. Therefore, Man United are favourites at 2/7 on paddypower.com with another 0-3 for the Red Devils 15/2.
