The 2010 world champion, seeded seventh in Germany, lost 5-3 to Wu Yize of China as the remaining top seeds made it through.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is absent after pulling out through illness but Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, Judd Trump, Mark Allen, Luca Brecel and Shaun Murphy all reached the first round proper.
