Jack Catterall vs Regis Prograis: Free boxing tips, best bets, undercard and where to watch

Light welterweight contenders Jack Catterall and Regis Prograis look to earn a world title shot as they face off in a compelling crossroads fight on Saturday at the new Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester.

Catterall was extremely unfortunate not to become an undisputed world champion in February 2022. After doing enough to dethrone Josh Taylor on away soil, he was controversially robbed on the cards.

The Chorley-born fighter’s career was derailed by this fight as injuries and boxing politics kept him out of the ring and prevented him from building momentum.

However, Catterall’s career has been on an upward trajectory since signing a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn in March 2023.

‘El Gato’ is still waiting for a long-overdue world title shot, but he earned sweet revenge by beating Taylor by unanimous decision in a heated rematch at Leeds’ First Direct Arena in May 2024.

Catterall has now won three fights in a row with Matchroom as he previously picked up comfortable victories against Darragh Foley and a past-it Jorge Linares.

The Brit looks to claim another scalp this weekend as he faces former world champion Prograis, who is attempting to bounce back from his landslide points defeat to Devin Haney in December 2023.

Prograis’ only other professional defeat was a narrow loss to Taylor in their 2019 thriller at The O2 Arena in London.

Below, we will provide our fight prediction and suggested bets, plus the thoughts of several boxing experts and tipsters.

Good luck and please gamble responsibly. (Please be aware odds are subject to change after the article's last update).

Eddie Hearn (promoter)

“It’s going to be a massive card, and I think it’s one of the best fights in the division, outside of a championship fight. So fair play to both.

“Another big card in the UK, tough fight for Jack Catterall, obviously…But Catterall is in the form of his life. No reason why he [Jack] can’t win the contest.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win

Adam Azim (boxer)

“I’ve got Catterall beating Regis Prograis.

“I think he’s been at that level, and then I think he’s doing quite well. So he’s beaten Josh Taylor, so I think I’ve got Catterall winning by points.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win on points

Dalton Smith (boxer)

“I think Catterall on a wide points decision. You can look and say Prograis is maybe sliding a little bit, but he’s still a dangerous fighter.

“He’s been one of the best in the world. So, you know, maybe he could turn up and show something he’s not done in his last few performances.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win on points

Dave Coldwell (trainer)

“His brain and his IQ is so underrated. He’s very, very clever there, really. His judgment of his distance is fantastic.

“He’s got good feet and he reads a fight really, really well. I would, I would actually say that.. I think Catterall is a slight favourite.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win

Liam Smith (boxer)

“I think it’s a very tough fight for Jack. It’s one I fancy him just nicking on points.

“A top fight for Jack and it’s literally one step before your world title. It’s good enough for a world title on the line.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win on points

Ricardo Viagem (Sportskeeda)

“Prograis has been inactive since December 2023. Ring rust may very well be a factor. Moreover, his last fight was a lopsided loss to pound-for-pound great Devin Haney.

“By comparison, Catterall is on a three-fight win streak, and has already fought twice in 2024, so he is carrying momentum, confidence and fitness.

“There’s also something to be said about how poor Prograis has looked in his most recent outings. Also, given how airtight Catterall’s defence usually is, Prograis – who generally struggles with his range and technical boxers – is likely to lose.

“None of the aforementioned concerns bode well for his chances against Catterall, especially when he was knocked down by Haney, who is often criticised for lacking punch power.”

Verdict: Jack Catterall to win via unanimous decision.

Lewis Oldham (Planet Sport)

Catterall vs Prograis sets up an intriguing clash of styles as the two southpaws do battle in the first-ever boxing headliner at Co-Op Live.

The 31-year-old Catterall has often been criticised for being too negative in his previous fights. But last time out, he used his jab to perfection as he picked Taylor off at will and even hurt the Scotsman at certain points.

A more front-foot approach was required against Taylor and his gameplan worked a treat.

But he would be wise to be more on the back foot against the 35-year-old Prograis. ‘Rougarou’ works best when he’s tasked with subduing an aggressor but struggles when the roles are reversed.

Prograis was somewhat exposed by Haney, who is a far superior boxer and counter-puncher.

More of the same could be coming this weekend if Catterall adopts a similar approach to Haney by taking the sting out of potential attacks by establishing his jab and gradually racking up the rounds on the cards.

Like Haney, Catterall is not considered to be a big puncher. But Prograis was dropped in his last fight and could further show his age this weekend as he’s outworked and outsmarted by a younger and – at this point – better fighter.

The safe money is with a Catterall points victory, but I suspect he’ll look to put on a show in the closing stages of the fight as his punching accuracy and high output will earn him a stoppage win between rounds 10-12.

Jack Catterall vs Regis Prograis undercard

All eyes will be on the main event at The Co-Op Live Arena, but there are a couple of notable bouts on the undercard.

In the chief support slot, there is a tasty British and Commonwealth super featherweight title fight as a resurgent Reece Bellotti defends his belts against Michael Gomez Jr.

Highly rated as a youngster, 33-year-old Bellotti’s career appeared to fall apart between 2018 and 2021 as he lost five fights in seven.

However, Bellotti has enjoyed an unexpected career resurgence as he’s won several fights as an underdog to claim the British and Commonwealth titles at super featherweight.

This weekend’s bout against Gomez Jr – the son of former British champion Michael Gomez – is the toughest of Bellotti’s recent run.

The two front-foot fighters are not afraid of a fire fight and if anything, they thrive under this adversity and this bout could easily steal the show.

Bellotti is the slight favourite and I give him the edge against Gomez Jr for a points win.

Further down the card, Campbell Hatton – son of Ricky Hatton – looks to avenge his only career loss, as he rematches James Flint.

Hatton – whose ceiling is much lower than his father’s – was deservedly beaten by Flint in their Central Area title fight earlier this year.

The 23-year-old has admirably opted to take the immediate rematch and comes into this bout with a new training team after ditching his uncle, Matthew Hatton.

Fighting just down the road from the home of his beloved Manchester City, Hatton is under immense pressure heading into this fight and will be looking to prove he has a few more levels to reach if he can progress in the next couple of years.

It’s hard to see where Hatton could go if he loses, but I’m backing him to get a much-needed victory via a narrow points win.
