European Darts Trophy tips and prediction: Price and Van Veen can excel in Germany

The PDC stars will take to the oche in Germany this weekend for the European Darts Trophy, and we’ve picked our two likely winners.
There’s an average year's wage for us poor people up for grabs when the PDC players descend on Gottingen in Germany this Friday, as they battle it out for the apathetically named European Darts Trophy.
Most of the big names will be in attendance at Lokhalle, except for Luke Littler who is knee-deep in cash and kebabs and doesn’t care for early-morning flights.
Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen will be packing their bags after squaring off in the Premier League on Friday night.
Number one and three in the order of merit, Humphries and Van Gerwen are priced at 3/1 and 7/1 respectively to claim the crown.
They, like all of the ranked players, will learn their opponents after an initial round of matches on Thursday sets up ties between 16 seeded players and the rest of the field.

The nature of the draw means the number one and two seeds can only meet in the final, but they’ll need to navigate some shark-infested waters to get there.
If all goes to plan and the seeds avoid any major upsets, which is rarely the case in these things, then Humphries will meet Josh Rock in the third round.
From there, he could progress to play the winner of Gerwyn Price and Nathan Aspinall, or whatever German primary schoolteacher gets the better of them.
Whoever makes it as far as the quarter-finals could meet Stephen Bunting, Jonny Clayton, Peter Wright or James Wade.
All of that is extremely presumptuous because it writes off the perfectly capable Order of Merit Qualifiers, such as Ryan Searle, Ross Smith, and Raymond Barneveld. It also overlooks Tour Card Qualifiers like Joe Cullen.
On the other side of the draw, Mighty Mike will await his fate but his first tough test could come in the third round with Dimitri Van den Bergh eyeing him up.
From there, Chris Dobey and Damon Heta could be on a collision course ahead of a potential quarter-final tie with MVG.
Rob Cross and Dave Chisnall are the highest-ranked semi-final opponents he could encounter, with Voltage and Chizzy needing to see off Gary Anderson and Danny Noppert respectively. Oh, and the German bus driver.
Shocks are aplenty at these things but Humphries justifies a 3/1 price tag having recently won the World Masters and claiming more PDC Tour events than anyone else in 2025.
It’s no surprise to see Price trail the favourites at 8/1 in the betting, but an eye-brow-raising inclusion in the shake-up is Gian van Veen at 18/1.
The young world number 24 recently wiped the floor with Jermaine Wattimena, James Wade, Madars Razma and Luke Humphries at a Players Championship event earlier this month, demonstrating how dangerous he can be with momentum behind him.
He edged out the Green Machine and The Nuke en route to the final a day earlier, so it’s clear he relishes any opportunity to face the big guns.
Boris Krcmar will be on stage again as the East European Qualifier having dispatched Michael van Gerwen in this format earlier this month.
The fact that MVG has bowed out at the first or second opportunity so often recently, including in the Premier League, makes it hard to back him. He’s faltered early in 13 of 14 tournaments since January 3.
His failing could open up the draw nicely for the Price to move through the gears as he did when finding success at the Players Championship in February.
The Welshman beat countryman Clayton, Littler, and Chris Dobey en route to the price, just one week before he came out the wrong side of an 11-leg shootout against Callan Rydz in the quarter-finals.
A lot depends on the draw and Price getting off the mark early, but there’s reason to believe he can come close in Germany.
