George Russell's challenges in Mercedes Formula 1 car explained
Mercedes clarify George Russell's challenging season within its Formula 1 car.
Mercedes have shed light on George Russell's difficulties within their Formula 1 machine this season.
The British driver previously acknowledged his struggles with the W14 challenger, admitting to falling behind his F1 competitors.
While Mercedes have been unable to contend for victories, teammate Lewis Hamilton has notably outperformed Russell throughout the year. The seven-time World Champion has secured 148 points compared to Russell's 99, exhibiting greater ease in race conditions.
Russell, who transitioned to Mercedes after a successful stint with Williams, achieved a triumphant debut season with the Silver Arrows, claiming his maiden victory in Brazil. However, this year has not been as favourable, with his only podium finish occurring in Spain.
Following last year's introduction of new technical regulations designed to enhance ground effect, Formula 1 cars are now closer to the track surface. Moreover, the stiffened suspension has amplified the challenge of maintaining optimal cornering balance.
Mercedes' Chief Technical Officer, Mike Elliott, conveyed that these factors contribute to Russell's struggles. "These cars are demanding to pilot, especially when hugging the ground," Elliott explained.
"Balancing the car through corners and managing its rigidity pose complexities."
Elliott expressed confidence in Russell's abilities, stating, "George is an exceptional driver; I believe he can swiftly adapt to extract the car's full potential."
As Formula 1 enjoys its summer hiatus, racing will resume at the Dutch Grand Prix on August 28th at Circuit Zandvoort.
