Thirsk racing tip (16:55): Favourite Summerghand to exploit drop in class

The 16:55 at Thirsk on Wednesday afternoon looks like the pick of the day’s racing and we’re backing the dream team of Tudhope and O’Meara to come good again

Nine runners will go to post for the 16:55 at Thirsk to be run over classic sprint distance on Wednesday afternoon, with Summerghand and Jehangeer the favourites.

Summerghand has reached his lowest mark in almost six years. The 10-year-old has been very active in the past 12 months but hasn’t produced a win in 15 starts, since dead-heating with Albasheer in August.

In his most recent race, the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, he performed admirably given the position he was racing from.

Jehangeer is seven years his junior but showed some potential when winning at Ayr last June and has since followed up with pleasing performances at Newmarket and York.

Tinto returns to Thirsk on the back of a course and distance win and usually goes well here, making the frame in most of his seven runs.

That win came in a field of similar quality and he’s only been nudged up a single pound in weight as a result, so we’d expect him to challenge the top two in the betting.

However, the bookie’s favourite does seem justified on this occasion.

The partnership of Daniel Tudhope and David O’Meara can be particularly profitable at Thirsk given both have strong winning records over the last five seasons.

Both trainer and jockey have produced a profit across 251 and 177 races respectively.

Given the drop in class, the popular Summerghand has the potential to get back to winning ways on Wednesday.

Suggested bet: Summerghand to win the 16:55 at Thirsk
