Southwell racing tip (1815): G’daay set for a good night at Southwell Racing League

The most attractive bets at the early prices are one of the two Newmarket raiders, G’daay, and the well-handicapped six-year-olds, Streak Lightning.

The early favourite is one of the three-year-olds at the foot of the handicap, Imperial Dreamer, and he is respected from the inside draw, racing off an unchanged mark after easily winning at Chepstow last time out.

At the head of the market, Aphelios looks vulnerable from a wide draw racing off a career-high mark following his win at Kempton last time.

Tahitian Prince, who won last time out, is another contender who looks vulnerable from a wide draw as he drops back from his optimum eight-furlong trip. He has only won once over this trip and has only won once over any trip since then.

With plenty of potential value elsewhere in the market, G’daay looks a good bet under this set of conditions. He loves nothing better than seven furlongs on a turning, left-handed track and he drops in class today following a very solid run in a Class 3 handicap last time out.

He went from the front that day and his rider might be tempted again from stall two today. But the five-year-old certainly doesn’t need to lead in order to win.

He was winning off today’s mark of 82 and he was sent off a 15/8 favourite for what was a 12-runner 0-82 handicap.

He won that race comfortably so he looks like a good-value bet off the same mark today, given his good effort in higher grade last time.
