Sandown best bet: Arqoob in prime shape to rekindle hurdle success

Red Rookie (middle) was only third over the last but a clear-cut winner in the end of the Telegraph Hill 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle at Sandown

There’s plenty of decent hurdlers in with a shout of landing this two-mile handicap, which looks like it could well be a battle between a couple of horses who have been kept fit on the Flat.

Legendary Day looks likely to be sent off as favourite under Brian Hughes, who guided him to victory on his hurdle debut last November, since two further efforts over smaller obstacles also produced frame finishes.

Four wins during a busy 14-race Flat campaign included the Mallard Stakes at Doncaster in September and that schedule has kept Adrian Keatley’s five-year-old in good shape ahead of a renewed assault over hurdles.

Most of his rivals here will be making their season debut following extended breaks, with two notable exceptions, with Kaleb carrying aspirations of a frame finish if he can build on the promise of his runner-up finish season debut three weeks ago at Plumpton.

Amy Murphy’s gelding finished a length clear of Arqoob, who recently returned to Lucy Wadham’s yard after a brief stint back with William Jarvis, with whom he had spent most of his early career on the Flat.

Kept in decent shape from his three Flat runs for Jarvis in late summer, Arqoob was quickly into his stride when taking on obstacles again last time out three weeks ago, finishing a promising third in a nine-runner handicap at Plumpton.

He remains in the capable hands of Bryony Frost who perhaps significantly has no other rides on Sunday after she landed a 28/1 winner on Friday and came third on Frodon on Saturday in her only rides on those two days.
