Newmarket trends analysis tips: Inquisitively ready to ask questions of strong Cornwallis line-up

Master Of The Seas ridden by William Buick wins Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket

This exciting Flat season still has a few last hurrahs up its sleeve, as Andrew of Fiosrach runs his trends analysis over a tasty five-furlong sprint that opens Newmarket’s Future Champions Festival.

A great result for the trends analysis column from last Saturday with our two selections finishing first and third

Atrium won at 25/1 after being available at 33/1 on race morning and Pearle D’or headed the far-side group to come third at 10/1 after firming up from 16/1.

Hopefully we can follow that up on Friday, despite the inauspicious date!

13:50 Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes (5 furlongs)

I am looking at the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes from Newmarket and it is a 15-runner field of two-year-olds, which is the kind of race I would advise to approach with extreme caution, but using trends we can reduce the field a little:

  • 18/20 – Had won over 5 furlongs
  • 15/20 – Won at least twice or more
  • 15/20 – Returned 8/1 or shorter
  • 15/20 – Rated 98 or more
  • 15/20 – Ran within the last 30 days
  • 15/20 – Had raced 5 or more times
  • 14/20 – Won by 1 ½ lengths or less
  • 14/20 – Foaled in March or later
  • 11/20 – Finished 1st or 2nd in their last race
  • 11/20 – Had won a Listed or Group race before
  •   9/20 – Filly winners
  •   7/20 – Raced at Ayr last time out
  •   7/20 – Won their last race
  •   6/20 – Winning favourites
  •   4/20 – Raced at Doncaster last time out
  •   3/20 – Ridden by Richard Kingscote
  •     3/9 - Trained by Jonathan Portman
  •   2/14 - Trained by Kevin Ryan
  •   2/14 - Ridden by Jamie Spencer
  •     2/6 - Came from stall 3
  •     4/6 - Came from stalls 3 or lower

Using those trends leaves us with a shortlist of three horses: Inquisitively, Alabama and Flora Of Bermuda.

Suggested bet: Inquisitively to win the 13:50 at Newmarket

Inquisitively has only had three runs, managing to win on his last start at York in the Listed Roses Stakes, and the return of William Buick to the saddle after that win suggests he was suitably impressed.

Alabama was back in fourth in that race and has two and a half lengths to make up. Inquisitively is favourably drawn in one and if William Buick can avoid being boxed in, Inquisitively should improve again.

Alabama comes from the all powerful Ballydoyle stable and curiously is yet to win on turf. The forecast rain is unlikely to be a plus looking at his breeding, but he does have a good draw in four.

Flora Of Bermuda gets a three-pound filly allowance, and she has plenty of experience already, having landed one win among her six outings so far.

However her best piece of form was last time out, when she finished second in the Flying Childers Stakes at Group 2 level. Flora of Bermuda did dwell at the start, however, which could be a concern if she repeats it in this company.

It was difficult to separate Flora of Bermuda and Inquisitively through their form lines with Big Evs, but by virtue of there being a greater likelihood of further improvement from Inquisitively he is the win bet selection here.
