Newmarket free racing tips: Two each-way options in wide-open Cesarewitch

Run for Oscar (bottom-left) ridden by David Egan on way to winning Cesarewitch Handicap

We always know the end of the Flat season is nigh when the Cesarewitch rolls around, and this year’s edition looks like being another pinstickers’ paradise (or nightmare).

15:40 Newmarket: Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap (2 miles 2 furlongs)

There's been plenty of early support for the Willie Mullins-trained Sea Of Sands and his nephew Emmet’s charge Jacoved Cavern, both of which are expected to go well under William Buick and Hayley Turner respectively.

In a handicap of this nature, however, our eager eye for each-way value has been scanning the lower depths of the betting, where Dawn Rising looks to be the pick of the mid-market candidates.

Another Irish raider from the yard of Joseph Patrick O’Brien (who also saddles Magellan Straits here), this proven stayer comes here with high hopes after finishing strongly to finish a creditable fifth of 30 in the Irish Cesarewitch at the Curragh 13 days ago.

Suggested best bet: Dawn Rising each-way in the 15:40 at Newmarket

Raced sparingly this year, that was Dawn Rising’s first outing since making the frame in the longest race on the UK Flat calendar, the 22-furlong Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, a race he had won the previous year.

For a seven-year-old of his ability, Dawn Rising looks to be on the boil racing off a reasonable mark, and with the trip and the going holding no qualms, he could well make at least the frame under the expert guidance of Tom Marquand.

With 25 scheduled starters and as many as eight places up for grabs, there is likely to be an unfancied prospect or two making his presence felt.

Gordon Elliott has sent over a couple of likely candidates, and while Ndaawi looks his number one, our eye is drawn to his second string, Samui, who began life as a hurdler, but has taken this year’s switch to the Flat very much in his stride.

Never out of the first three in six Flat outings that include two ins and two seconds, this five-year-old was a well-held third over two miles at this venue last time out 16 days ago.

He should strip better for that here, and with Keithen Kennedy’s useful five-pound claim, they could well make their presence known down the final stretch.

Outsider punt: Samui each-way in the 15:40 at Newmarket
