Newcastle each-way racing tip (1900): Drop in trip looks a good fit for Panama City

Newcastle racecourse

There's a busy racecard lined up at Newcastle on Tuesday night, and this competitive handicap over a mile has plenty of likely candidates looking to give the firm favourite something to think about.

Staring at the bottom of the market upwards, there are a couple that stand-out candidates to outrun their double-digit prices in the shape of Prince Hector and Retirement Beckons, who both look capable of having a say in the placings.

To win, however, they will need to get their nose in front of market leader Ledger, who the market suggests should win this at a canter if able to replicate the performance that saw him land an 11-runner handicap over this course and distance a week ago.

That success has earned the favourite a six-pound penalty, and if that levels the playing field, it could open the field for top-weight Panama City, according to racing pundit Richard Hutchinson, who runs his Read Between The Lines service on Tipstrr, where he offers the following analysis.

We put up Panama City in August this year, but he didn’t show that day and annoyingly (and probably inevitably) he promptly placed on his next run at 50/1.

He tailed off on heavy going last time out and while he had stayed the 10-furlong trip in the past, the heavy going seems to be stretching his stamina to the limit.

He was previously campaigned over six and seven furlongs, so he does have speed, but now we know he stays the one-mile-two trip (just) the drop back to a mile today might just end up being his optimum trip.

The gelding has only raced once on the all-weather, but that was a positive experience, finishing a four-length ninth of 14 over six furlongs off a mark of 75 (postmark 70), where he was bumped and outpaced over the sprint trip.

This one-mile trip should help him, and his handicap mark of 54 looks very exploitable considering he’s postmarked a high of 78 and 70 on that sole all-weather start a year ago.

It looks significant that Billy Garrity has been the stable’s strike jockey of late and he replaces the inexperienced amateur seven-pound claimer after landing two wins from his nine rides so far this month, he can take advantage of a good draw here.

Suggested bet: Panama City each-way in the 19:00 at Newcastle
